So What Caught Your Eye Today?

Lars, your V. joannis looks to be a hybrid. Certainly far from an expert, I’ve been told that Veitchia here in Hawaii are notorious for cross pollinating and some have even suggested getting a true joannis would be extraordinary. There are some older specimens locally in East Hawaii that look like the real deal, with weepy, droopy leaflets, noticeably different than V. arecina. I’ve seen many specimens that have that in-between look including a couple in my garden which were collected as seed from a local garden.

This is just an observation on my part, and it’s worth is just that.

Tim

Tim,

Thank you for your comment - neither am I an expert in this case... 😃 However, those seeds were one of the first I purchased from rps several years ago - I can only hope that

they were 'pure' when they had them in stock at that time. What caught my eye - when ordering - was excactly what you described - those weepy, droopy leaflets - a dream of a palm!

When I took the photo a few days ago, the weather conditions weren't fortunate - today they look much better (droopier) but it rains, it is windy and the sky is dark somehow.

I will work my way into the description of this species soon, checking the details, maybe I can find a clue to narrow down their ID. Btw., I am growing V. arecina, spiralis and winin

as well - but still too young - it should be helpful for comparison. 👍

Two things caught my eye after our many days of rain.  First was checking on the flower spathe which has begun to crack open on my Chrysalidocarpus prestonianus .  As I approached it to get a better look, I also noticed the great backlighting on an Encephalartos planted adjacent to it.  So here is what I saw last night as the sun was getting low in the sky.

The heavily mottled Licuala sp (unsure of its ID) always looks perfect in my Singaporean weather. It never fails to catch my attention every time I check on my garden.

Hi Okkidoggi! I am so impressed with your posts! Thank you so much.

That mottled Licuala is simply gorgeous and makes my mapus look drab.

On my one trip to Thailand in 2012 (my first Biennial), I had an introduction to Singapore and expect I might be there again in 2026 when the IPS returns to your part of the world.

Hope to see you there!

This buc caught my attention last year and apparently no one realized what they had.  Couldnt pass it up it only has slight damage from the freezes (they covered it with weedmat to protect it and their other palms)

Teng, glad you are taking advantage of your warm humid tropical climate. I couldn’t believe how beautiful the Licuala, Sommeria, and the Joey’s were on a visit there. ( few amongst many) Will be back in October, so looking forward to being in Singapore again.

Hi,

took some weeds out today and enjoyed to look at this Licuala naumannii which was almost overgrown during the winter.

  • 3 weeks later...

Though i decided to put it here, could easily be added to the " Prom Queen" thread, Some surprise Queen palms spotted in Superior, AZ while walking along the highway to a gas station 2 miles away, after one of the tires on the car went flat.. Yes, lol.. even surprise automotive chaos won't stop this guy from getting pictures of plants spotted while seeking assistance for that chaos.. Lol..

IMG_0466.thumb.JPG.a24e4725ff79349c8081906b64d4b902.JPG

While Superior isn't cold, -by small town, outside-the-valley locations standards- Superior is small enough that they do get pretty chilly so often / can see an inch or so of Snow at times in the winter.. Though fairly tough, i'd never seen these ..or any other Queens  up there until yesterday.

*** Semi-related, the nasty, non native, Seedpod -throwing Leucanea leucocephala  trees we have all over Chandler ( ..and other areas around greater Phoenix ) spotted a couple of those growing up there yesterday as well.. very close to where flying pods, full of viable seed can access one of several creeks as well.

Btw, tire went flat along the highway east of where you see the overpass in the distance ..Two lanes, very narrow shoulders, bordered by the mountains you see..  ...**Fun ** Sunday for sure 😂🙃..

Not a palm, but I randomly spotted a lovely Rhododendron Ferrugineum in complete flower today near a local church. It’s a shame they don’t look like this all year long. It’s not done too badly either, given the terrible winter we just had. It’s a gorgeous plant/tree.

My Chambeyronia Macrocarpa put out its first new leaf (for me). I’ve been waiting a little over a month for it to open up.  It’s a little guy, but exciting nonetheless.
