Washingtonia Robusta issue?

bgifford

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

I have four Washingtonia Robusta (two newly in ground and two potted). I noticed after taking them outside earlier this year, that some of the leaves are starting to bend over. Even with some new growth.

The Palms are still growing rather quickly but I figured I'd ask if this is a sign of a bigger issue (fungal or pest).

Thanks.

Brian

If that's all, I feel a lot better. We do have some gusty winds here at times. Thanks

All it took was a few 40 mph wind gusts to damage the fronds of my in ground robusta. The damage looks similar.

Yep. Wind. Dirty Sanchez looked like that most of winter and spring.

On a more extreme scale, Hurricane Sally shredded the fronds of my neighbor's washy down to the petioles on all the fronds facing the wind. The max wind gusts here was in the 80-90 mph range. Wind can be rough on fan palms.

It didn't help when I threw a blanket over it either.

I also learned that he can't handle 18 degrees in a pot upstairs. I think I set his growth back a good 2 years.

Either wind damage or someone put something on top of the palm (covered with blanket, etc.)

Nothing wrong with palm.  Will grow out of it.

You might find that when the next spear opens it will be a little more resistant to wind since it has been swaying around a lot already and swaying around while it was opening  , whereas the fronds that were mature and in the house without wind were easily busted up when they were first introduced to wind . Of course any serious wind will mess up all the  fronds .

Wind damage from having my washingtonias on a north facing balcony in Plano from January-April. All have put out like half a dozen new leaves since but they looked rough for awhile, and it kind of messes with your head when a broken segment of a frond starts to get yellow or brown out but you don’t want to cut it off completely because it’s still half green

Thank you everybody. We did have a couple of really rough days in May and early June where we had a ton of Wind and Severe weather. I guess the one day we had 65MPH gust did some of that damage. Since I created this Topic, I noticed no more leaves that had that issue.

Thank you all again.
