My queen, pindo, and date palm all made it in Dallas this year (queen and date with protection of course). Even with protection the Dec freeze was rough on the queen. Recovering quickly now that it has warmed up though!

That's as sad as what has become of that theatre since it opened 25(?) years ago. It's like the pandemic also took the palms with the theatre biz

Luckily, I heard more patrons are returning but I am not sure what will become of this particular location as the Fry's behind it went belly up last year.

I saw so many good movies there, sucks.

I also used to swing by these particular condos 20 years ago! I haven't checked on a lot of these that you guys spotted for me since the

deadly freezes. I hate to see all the devastation, bad enough what I see on my side of town!

Thanks for the DFW palm spotting!

Pic from today of 2 Massive Washingtonias in Carrollton. This makes for 4 huge Washingtonia in like a 3 mile radius - clearly a favorable microclimate

Not the best pic but this Robusta hybrid at Hooters downtown is recovering pretty quick and is now putting out a few normal mature fronds per week. Probably will love the 90’s and rain coming up this weekend and into next week. I’m guessing it will look aesthetic again by Memorial Day. There’s another one on other side of building with another 5 feet of trunk that looks just as good

Almost like the Southside ones were actively growing and the north side one wasn't.  Curious!

Could be, but the north west one that survived was taller than the building, so it was getting sun all day. Plus when we get warm weather, it’s not like we barely get over 70. Overall this survivor is consistent with others around the city, close to a building and/or facing south/tall enough to get sun all day

That would be very short sunlight as the sun angle is 48 degrees in winter at Dallas latitude and that is at noon.

You can sort of overlay this angle to get an idea.

Amazing when considering that it is also exposed to those north winds!

Amazing that you were able to keep the Queen alive.  I know they can handle brief cold snaps in the mid-upper teens. I have planted a juvenile on the northwest side of the house last year, protected it with a bucket and one thin bedsheet,  no other heat sources were applied.  Didn't expect it to survive at the beginning but it recovered well now pushing out its third front.  I was so happy to see that it survived our artic winter we had in December.  What did you use for protection and how cold did it get in Dallas?

Updated pics of the beasts of Carrollton - my prediction was that they would look semi aesthetic by Memorial Day and I think I was right - they could use a trim but as far as crown size go they don’t look much different than the overpruned ones I saw in Palm Springs last weekend

Nice!! It got down to 12 at my house in dallas. When it was small I would go with a ladder over it and then a heavy tarp over the ladder with a heat source under (or incandescent Xmas lights wrapped with a blanket). How far you need to go of course depends on how cold it will get. I never like mine to get below 25 so now I’ll typically get it fully enclosed with 3millimeter plastic and heaters under the enclosure when it’s getting real cold (like for the feb21 freeze below).0EE8A5E9-CF8F-472F-8795-35BBFE65DC0F.thumb.jpeg.32217a9dd82e479e0b993e510ae746d8.jpeg7388F0D9-D102-4EDE-9991-384ED15712BB.thumb.jpeg.b192575696ed225b536b61eaf086a2fa.jpegB174FBB3-9EB2-44BB-80A0-DA5EDA3F7EEB.thumb.png.60d1fbe801233e90fc8cfec1e72fc73b.png

That's a very effective protection.  As long as they're "small" it's not that hard to protect them I just wonder what my and your protection method will be once they're reaching over 25 feet .

Drove past this today, couldn’t get a pic but found on google maps. Does not seem like a palmetto or Mexicana to me,  almost looks like a Bermudana to me up close. Absolutely unphased by this winter too and just really really robust

That may be wishful thinking, but it is a beautiful sabal nonetheless.  We've got three bermudanas and they all fried quite well with the 10.6F we saw, and arguably where you saw this palm was a degree or two warmer.  It's been my experience they burn in the 12-14F.  It's funny, but sometimes the nicest looking palms are these neglected ones that were thrown in a random spot and no one even cares for them.. meanwhile.. we obsess over ours, ha.

Subscribe to my YouTube here  to follow along my Sabal obsession....  Quite possibly one of the biggest Sabal plantings in the US.

Sabals seem to be all over the place in DFW. I’ve seen some well north of the city that look like nothing happened and then some close to downtown that are fried

Just found this young Phoenix canariensis while searching on streetview. It was planted after the 2021 freeze and survived the '21-22 winter, I would love to see it now!

Thanks, I love palm sleuthing on Google Maps! Yeah I wonder if it got defoliated this winter as well. How bad was this past winter in Dallas?

It definitely defoliated this winter, and that’s fine it should bounce back quicker than last year given that we got our low temp in December of 22   . Some of the CIDP’s in Dallas looked really really good in early 2021 prior to Palmagaeddon, and that’s after being defoliated 6 times in previous decade.

There's another CIDP a street down, and a true date palm on other side of neighborhood
