Afternoon all

Another question I'm afraid....

Amongst my growing collection I have 2 small CIDP's and a small Jubaea Chilensis.  I've noticed that newest fronds on one of the CIDPs and the JC are smaller than the previous fronds, whilst the leaflets are much shorter / closer together.  I wondered if this is normal? Presumably they wont grown any more, once fully open?

The palms seem ok otherwise, the fronds are green (although lighter green than the other fronds, the spears looked healthy and the roots that I can see through the drainage holes appear to be a healthy creamy / white colour.

They are in decent sized pots with John Innes no. 3 compost (repotted this spring).  They are positioned so they get full sun in the morning, then a couple of hours of partial shade around midday (thanks to a large tree in the garden) and then full sun again from early / mid afternoon onwards.  I water them every 2-3 days at the moment, mainly due to the temperature and lack of rain across the South East of the UK over the last couple of months.  I also feed them every couple of weeks with Palm Focus concentrated liquid fertiliser. I have thought about trying a slow release fertiliser for the next growing season, but I'm not really sure if there are any advantages to this approach.

I've attached a few photos....

Thank you everyone.

That’s normal.
More sun=more compact growth.

How long do you have the CIPD’s?

Thanks Melvin B.  That would make sense as the most recent fronds have come through during an unusually dry / warm / sunny summer. I always thought that they would prefer a fun sun position, but maybe it's worth moving them to a more shaded spot?

I've had them for around 4-5 months.  They're not particularly large, but they have a good shape to them, where as many I've seen were very skinny / weak looking.  So far, the Jubaea has thrown out more fronds, which was not what I expected!

More then likely they were grown in a green house and could be stretched leaves. Keep them in the sun they will adjust with time.

Thanks TJ

I think I leave them as they are for now and monitor any future fronds, that said, were heading towards Autumn now so I'd imagine their rate of growth / new fronds will begin to slow soon.
