My Coontie's have many small plants growing under their mature leaves. What time of year and best practice needed to relocate the seedlings?

Coonties are pretty tough, so I'd think any time of year except winter is fine.  I separated some Dioon Edule seedlings by slicing straight down into the ground on 3 sides with a trowel.  Then I scooped them out and tried to keep at least a few of the roots intact along with the caudex.  I potted them up in 3x3x9" Steuwe pots and put them in a partly shaded area to root in.  I haven't tried it with Coonties, but I did "harvest" some Furfuracea seedlings from a local plant.  The landscapers routinely came through and weedwhacked the tops off of the seedlings, so I just went by and scooped a few out with my fingers.  I just dug in with my fingers to find the caudex and yanked it out, breaking the main root.  I repotted them later and they all grew...  :D
