My Spanish palm garden photos

Recommended Posts

Posted

Its about time i got some updated photos of the garden uploaded. The past 2 years have been of course trying to find new palms to plant but also investing on the care. I managed to get local cheap farm water here but had a breakdown on the pump system in the middle of August while we were away so had a dry out 🤦‍♂️ most have bounced back but lost a couple of new smaller palms. Its really tough here in Spain to find a variety of specie. I have a greenhouse with some interesting seedlings growing but as you all know it takes time. Hope you enjoy the photos.

@TropicalGardenSpain great setup and glad to see they are bouncing back from an accidental drought!  I could figure out most of the IDs, but had a hard time with two of them:

2126614577_Arengasomething.thumb.jpeg.640115b86025a684069472fde067cf0a.jpeg

I couldn't figure out if that one is a type of Arenga or Dypsis?

And is that one a Gaussia Princeps?

Thank you Meryln! Correct on the second one. The first one is Allagoptera caudescens.

Ah, that's why I couldn't figure it out!  I have a couple of Caudescens, but my only one about 1/4 that size died in the 24-25F frost last January.  Awesome garden!!!

Sorry to hear that! I hope you have better luck with it in the future. Seems a very interesting palm. My little ones are doing well in the shade.

Sounds like Texas!  :)  Very nice palms, congratulations!   Is the smaller palm below Gaussia gomez-pompae?  I've had good success with this palm and is only one of a couple that survived planting as a 1-gal juvenile about half the size of yours.

South Florida very rarely goes below 0C, but Central and North Florida are zones 9b/9a/8b.  At my house (NW of Orlando) I usually get one or two nights around 28F/-2C each winter.  But it's normally a brief cold front.  The sky clears at 6am and the temperature drops for 1-2 hours...and then the sun comes up and it warms up into the 60s almost instantly.  The cold front was unusually cold for me, but a couple of miles away it only got to 0C.  I was just in an "unlucky spot," I guess.  :D

I recall about 10 years ago being in Florida - WDW. Orlando 42°, Ocala 28°. Ouch!

Where do you live in Spain? This looks very tropical, some of your species really need a warm weather. Very beautiful!!
