Various Sabal seeds discounted ('Lisa', miamiensis, 'DeFuniak Springs')

It's getting a bit late in the year, and I'll have a new harvest soon, so I'm dropping the price for last year's seeds.

Sabal miamiensis                  $10/50, $15/100

Sabal 'DeFuniak Springs'     $8/50, $12/100

Sabal palmetto 'Lisa'            $12/50, $18/100

Add $3 shipping, please DM for PayPal address and to order.

A word about shipping:  If you want, I can give you FREE SHIPPING for small orders (200 seeds or less), but there's no tracking and no refunds if your package doesn't arrive.  I used this method several times this year (non-machineable stamp), and only one package from an eBay order never made it to its destination (allegedly).  The $3 option (which actually costs me a minimum of $4.50) gives you tracking and more peace of mind (for everyone, LOL).

Btw, the Lisa seeds I bought from you a few months back are doing great!  I bought 50, you sent 65ish and I got germination on literally 60.  Now it's just the 3 year slog to see who got the good genes!

I love to hear that!  Let me know in three years what your Lisa percentage is, LOL.  I've got some going myself from the same batch.  I just don't have room to grow hundreds of normal Sabal palmetto.  Wish there was a definitive way to find out earlier in their life if they carried the Lisa trait or not!

Frank!  I bought seeds from you on Etsy!  I didn't know that was you @Bigfish.

Haha, that was you?  Well if you want more, order here, lol!  😁

The Miamiensis and DeFuniak are doing great that I bought earlier this year... I got a lot of good germination, transplanted, and they're out working on their second, or in some cases third strap leaf.  I even put one of the DeFuniak little guys with two straps leaves in the ground, in a prime location.  Thanks!

Fantastic!  I'm probably not going to be anywhere near DeFuniak Springs this year, so I'm not collecting it anytime soon.  This year's miamiensis seed crop is almost completely ripe, I just need to cut them down and clean them.

Here was an updated street view of the DeFuniak Springs Sabal. It certainly isn't a Sabal Palmetto.
It most closely looks like Bermudana. I attached a couple pictures of a Bermudana from Mercer Arboretum this spring. The dead leaves are from the Texas Freeze. Glad to see it survive.

FYI...I ordered 50 Sabal etonia "Miamiensis" seeds from @Bigfish last spring....I had a germination rate over 85% on those suckers....more seedlings than I knew what to do with.  I was really happy with that order!

It does slightly resemble S. bermudana, but the seeds aren’t big enough, and the inflorescence is quite different also by being held erect above the crown (similar to Sabal minor).  It’s been suggested that it could be S. brazoriensis, but I’m not sold on that either.

Man, that’s awesome!  Always glad to hear good germination results.

S. miamiensis is its own species, btw, and not a cultivar of S. etonia.

I read that opinion. I have a Brazoria, and have seen two very old Brazoria in person. Not the same.

Here are a couple more look alike Sabals planted in a Galveston 1980s neighborhood that don’t look like any of the Sabal Palmetto in the neighborhood. You can see the offspring below also look like the adults and not Palmetto’s.

There was another in the area that looked like a large-ish trunking Sabal Louisiana, but can’t hunt that one down yet.

Those look like bermudana!  There were a couple of decent-sized bermudana at Kanapaha Botanical Gardens in Gainesville, but they got killed off by something (a LOT of palms there have been killed), probably Lethal Bronzing Disease.  They declined and died very quickly.  There were several seedlings at the base, and some have been allowed to grow in their place.  They flower at a VERY young age, well before the trunk starts growing above ground.

According to Scott Zona, you would be right.  There is current disagreement on that point within the "community." Kew Gardens Plants of the World Online (POWO) currently does not recognize it as a separate species (they list it as a synonym for Sabal etonia); although, they do acknowledge there are competing taxonomies. I typically follow the POWO when referencing binomial names. See: https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:284486-2

Any chance you would ship to Canada? I'd pay for the extra shipping obviously (as long as its reasonably priced!). Interested in those DeFuniak Springs Sabals.

I can attest that these are fresh seeds.  I got back from a trip to Arizona late last night, and I just saw first germination this morning on both the Sabal sp. 'DeFuniak Springs' and the Sabal palmetto 'Lisa' seeds that I received in late October.  I put the cleaned and soaked seeds in the baggie on October 31; therefore, it was less than 15 days until first germination (I left on November 8, so they germinated sometime between November 8 and November 13).  From past experience, I think that is pretty good for Sabal spp. seeds  This is my second batch of seeds procured from this seller (the Sabal etonia 'Miamiensis' seeds were the first batch last spring, and they produced a plethora of seedlings for me).  Thus far, as a Sabal spp. enthusiast, I am a big fan of the @Bigfish.

You’re too kind, sir!  Those seeds are right at a year old now too.  I’m not sure how long Sabal seeds stay viable, but I would guess several years, at least.  Good luck with your seedlings, and thanks again!

Fresh seeds coming very soon!!!

My "Lisa" seeds are popping now, about a dozen so far, from your etsy or ebay store, can't remember which.

What is the best way to collect the Defuniak seeds?  I went today and collected some off the ground. What do you recommend?

I don't quite understand your question... you already collected the seeds, but you want to know the best way to collect them?

Yes, sorry I should have been more clear.. I only collected a handful but I seen quite a few still up in the tree. Just wondering if you had a method to collecting a large amount of seeds from hard to reach trees.

I always feel so odd collecting seeds in public, like I’m up to no good or something.

Yes, plenty of both are available!  These are from 2021 though, but Sabal seeds stay viable for many years and these are still sprouting quite well for everyone.  Send me a DM to order, please.
