Here is a picture of Spanky the Roystonea regia partially hidden by a Livistona australis that got a lot bigger a lot faster than expected.

So sawed it down, but missed the mark on the hinge cut a bit, and it fell into a clump of Rhapis humilis and destroyed a wodetya and Ravenea glauca.

Electrics are best for people who, like me, are kinda dilettantes about all this chainsaw business.

(Kind of a soapbox/public service announcement)

Gas engines are a lot more powerful, and, properly maintained will last longer, and you don't have to worry about batteries and power cords. But, dealing with those oil/fuel mixtures, carb cleaning, etc. etc., can get to be a HUGE pain in the rear end, especially if you don't use the saw very much. Just plug in an electric and ziip away you go. I remember one day a friend with his gas saw, and me with my electric, were working together, and he couldn't get his saw started. I was able to get my work done and partway through his.

BUT! Eventually those electric motors do wear out. But money's worth in the meantime.

Good to see you! Yeah, sometimes this editing goes a bit awry, another lesson in life's never-ending series.

Getting better, but still a misstep or two.

I have a gas chainsaw that I use less than once per year.  I have never had it serviced or cleaned.  The secret is to run the saw dry after use.  In storage the gas will evaporate, leaving the oil sludge to foul the carburetor.   Run it dry,   and it will always start the next time !    :winkie:

Yep.  The nice thing about the plug-in electric is that they produce maximum torque when they are stopped.  So it's more difficult to bog them down and get them stuck.  AND they produce minimum torque at maximum speed, so there's much less chance of kickback.  I keep a gas saw on a shelf but haven't used it in at least 5 years.  The lines are probably rotted out by now.  Small jobs are great for a 40V Ryobi battery.  I'd have no problem taking down that Livistona with my parent's Stihl MSA-160.

Just seeing this makes me glad I edited when I did with only 8-15' trunk on several palms.  Seems like its impossible to really understand what things will be like when many small palms get big.  After Ian, I think more and more about placement away from the house and slower growing palms that take more wind.

Dave, I pour the gas from the saw back into the storage gas can. using a large funnel  Then the saw will run for only a minute or two on the remnant gas.  :)

I dunno, it always seems like the run out of gas when you want to do something, but never do when you want them too. Kind of like the Miracle of the Gas.

I put this up as an educational reminder to be mindfully nutty.

But, that said, there's just times when you don't know. I didn't know that the Livistona would get that tall, that fast or get that scraggly. If I had, I wouldn't have planted it, at least not right there.
