Tillandsia 'sp. 'Creation'

Al in Kona

Recommended Posts

This is my Tillandsia sp. 'Creation'.  It grows to a height and width of about 76cm (30").  Flowers are a very nice pink color.  When I first got this plant I did not know what it was but now that I do know its name I wanted to share it with you.  Any of you growing it?  What media are you using?

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Very nice Creation Al , I have 2 plants that are yet to flower . Am growing them in a mix of bark , scoria , charcoal , and peat . These seem to like very high humidity , as the leaves often stick together . This is called 'quilling' in bromeliads , and with some species can kill the plant . Frequent misting usually fixes this , and sometimes a soapy solution squirted into the stuck leaves .

I have seen a very well grown Creation at over 1m tall , it was grown up on the cooler Tablelands by a very experienced grower , she was attemting to pollinate it , I hope she succeded.

Michael in palm paradise,

Tully, wet tropics in Australia, over 4 meters of rain every year.

Home of the Golden Gumboot, its over 8m high , our record annual rainfall.
