HIPS (Hawaii Island Palm Society) will meet September 23, at 1 pm with a tour of two gardens, first the garden of Matt & Tiffany Rippa and then the garden of Jerry & Cindy Andersen (formerly Ken Foster's place).  Expect to see some unusual palms.

Any people interested in palms who might happen to be traveling in Hawaii at this time should definitely make an effort to come see these two unique gardens.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

As it turns out, I will be in Hawaii (Kona side) on "business" until 9/24.  So, I may be able to attend.

Is there additional information available?  Thanks..

Jason,

Both of these gardens are in Leilani Estates. Pretty much walking distance between the two of them. And about a mile away from our place.

From Highway 11, which runs from Kailua-Kona around the southern point of the island, to Hilo, take Highway 130 at the Kea'au junction (about 6 miles south of Hilo), and stay on Hwy 130 until about half a mile after Mile marker 13. Make a left onto Leilani Avenue (that's the only left for several miles). After about half a mile, make a right onto Kula Street, which is the first PAVED street on your right. Matt & Tiffany's place is about 4-5 properties down the street, on the right side. You won't be able to miss it!

Incidentally, both Matt Rippa and Jerry Andersen are Forum members (moonowl and jdapalms resp.).

I hope to see you there! And maybe a few other mainlanders as well...?

Thanks for the directions, Bo.  I will do my best to be there.  Sounds great!

For those 60+ people who were able to attend HIPS two garden palm tour yesterday (Sep. 23), the gardens of Matt Rippa and Jerry Andersen, they certainly got a palm overload!  Almost too much for one to process in a few hours time.  Did anyone snap some pictures that you could share here with everyone?  Hope someone did.  Palms, cycads and all the other tropical plants to accompany them were everywhere.  If you've never been to a true rainforest, this was as good or better as it included literally hundreds of different palms into just a few acres of mostly canopied space!  Yes, there also were more open areas as well, especially for those palms that require more sun to show themselves off properly.  All in all it was eye candy to the max.

I hope someone posts something in the Travel Logs section.  That would be awesome!
