A few pictures from the Dallas World Aquarium in Dallas, Texas taken over Memorial Day Weekend 2022.  This was my first time visiting.  Some cool specimens here, both inside and out.

Could those be some kind of Gaussia?

I am no expert on either the Gaussia or Hyophorbe genera palms by any means.  I did suspect that the fronds on those outdoor "bottles" did not seem "stiff" enough to be Hyophorbe lagenicaulis; I was thinking more along the lines of Hyophorbe verschaffeltii, which I believe have more "feathery" fronds.  But I guess a Gaussia sp. could be a candidate as well.

I’m definitely no expert either and get a lot of IDs wrong lol. I did pick up a Gaussia gomez-pompae last year at a palm sale and looked up a bunch of info on them and thought the ones in your pics looked similar. Not sure the cold hardiness on them though. Palmpedia says tropical sub tropical?

Either way it looks like a beautiful garden there, thanks for sharing the pics!

  • 1 month later...

Amazing conservatory spaces.  Is that a sloth and a monkey in those trees?  I think it was the Omaha zoo that incorporated monkeys within the Jungle conservatory spaces and the mesh allowed them to be visible but apart from visitors.  Cool effect.
