Weeping Leaf Form of Serenoa repens

Bigfish

Recommended Posts

Someone told me about these palms in South Georgia a few years ago, so I was in the area recently and decided to check them out for myself.  They do look different from most Serenoa because of the weeping habit.  Even in shade, Serenoa tend to have stiffer leaflets than these.  I’ve photographed “normal”-looking palms right next to them for comparison, and included those pictures in this post as well.  You’ll be able to tell the difference.  There are probably a dozen palms all right near each other that have this form.

The last four pictures are of the standard form, and are all in the same area.  Sorry for the jumbled nature of the pictures, but it’s impossible to insert comments under each photo anymore.

Nice pics!  What I do to put in comments is perhaps a bit cumbersome but doable.  I insert all the photos first and then "submit reply".  I then go back and edit the reply by clicking on the 3 dots and "edit".  I click on photo #1 and hit "enter" which puts a blank line between the first two photos.  Then I click on the blank line and enter the text I want.  Repeat this for each photo.

Is it possible to do that with the mobile browser?  Thanks for the suggestion!

Ok, I’ll have to remember that for next time.  It looks like my window to edit has passed.

Yes, I think the window is somewhere around 45 minutes to an hour.  Might be less since the big update.

Nice looking palms!! When do Serenoa usually have seeds?

Regards Neil

Serenoa seeds anytime from July-November, but seeds are usually gone by mid-October.

A very nice looking form of Serenoa!  Looks like the leaf segments are much longer causing the weeping effect.  Wonder if it is also a faster growing or more cold hardy form? Someone needs to get seeds out. Are these out of the way to visit?

I collected seeds.  I didn’t get many, but I will make a few available in December or January.  I’m heading out of town tomorrow for a while.

I’ve noticed that the silver form tends to ripen seeds later than the green form, but maybe I am just imagining things, lol.  I see the silver form with seeds right now here in Gainesville, FL, but the green form drops its seeds usually before October starts.  Some hang on into later in October.
