tall pots for seedlings

Recommended Posts

I have seen some members here grow their palm seedlings in a tall pot, I am guessing 4"X4" square pots?  These pots fit nicely together in a compact arrangement may be 4 to 6 in a row that fit snug in a rectangular tray.

Do those come in a set?  Like 24 pots + 1 tray?

I tried googling for them but couldn't find them, I probably didn't use the proper keywords.  Anyone care to steer me in the right direction or a place to get these at good prices?

Try going to stuewe.com - they have an excellent selection. Not sure how many you might need but sometimes they are offered for sale here on Palmtalk or on Amazon.

^ X2 for Stewie.. Was able to order whatever quantity of pots / Tubes desired. Trays they sit in are extra though, but sold individually... or were when i ordered last year.  At least for Tubes.

With the square pots ( Anderson Pots, Tree Pots, etc  ) be aware may need to cut some pieces of fabric to fit the bottom to help keep the soil from washing out since the base of the pots have large holes ( Anderson Pots esp. ).

I am a bit confused with the stuewe.com product offerings.

Let use this particular pot as an example, product AB46, linked below:

https://stuewe.com/product/3-63-x-6-anderson-band/

AB46 – 3.63 x 6″ Anderson Band

Anderson Band pots are the quality standard for both bedding plant and tree growing. The open cross bottom pot air prunes roots as they grow out the bottom.

Plant Band Pots Per Tray:

AFLAT3 – 20

AFLAT5 – 16

TRAY6 – 16

$40.80 Case
and it says 120 items per case.

So $40.80 is for one case of these pots?  There are 120 of these pots in each case?  But that doesn't sound right because then each pot is only 0.33?

and 20 cases will fit inside a AFLAT3 tray.  So if I want to put all 120 pots in trays I need six trays but trays are also sold in cases of 20?

So if I want to just try one tray and 20 pots there is no way to get it in that small a quantity?

Also check out Greenhouse Megastore. I have been ordering these for the past few years and have good success for seedlings before up-potting into 1 or 3 gallon pots. D43L tree pots with tray. Comes in set of 25.

Newbie here, first time posting so be gentle.

I drink a lot of seltzer in one liter plastic bottles. I drill a 1 1/8" hole in the bottom, cut the top off with a razor, put a piece of mesh over the hole in the bottom and now I have a 3" by 7-8.5" tall 'pot'.

I am a seed scavenger, currently have ten triangle palm seeds germinating (one popped up yesterday!), six pygmy date palm seedlings, multiple areca and foxtails and a bunch of alexander palms which have graduated to one gallon pots outside.

18 bottles/pots fit in a 10/20 tray and I set that on a heat mat for germinating.

I love Greenhouse Megastore, but this is basically free and saves space in the recycling bin.

A lot of people on here use 1- or 2-liter bottles as pots. Welcome to PalmTalk.

My thought is 500 ml water bottles. Cut off the bottom, invert. The cap can be removed and saved.

I use the 0.5 liter water bottle but my seedlings has kind of outgrown those, so I am looking for slightly larger/taller pots.

might try the stuewe pots but for the tall pots when you need to remove the palms, it's so tall I think the pot needs to be cut open to get the plant out safely right?

Normally the tall ones have just enough taper to work.  I have used the 3x3x9, 4x4x12 and 6x6x16 (I think) sizes.  These I can just invert and squoosh it a bit, and the palm or cycad just slides right out.  The only times I've had problems are with cycads that grow a large diameter root bulge in the middle.  The 6" diameter x 12" tall pots are good but don't have a taper to them, so they are tougher to get palms out of them.  Even so, I've only had to cut one of the round ones.  And that was because the cycad in it had about a 8" diameter root ball inside a 6" diameter pot, and was literally splitting the pot in half.

That's good to know.  Thanks.

Here are some pictures of the Licuala seedlings (I have several dozens of them) in water bottles.  I am debating whether it is time to upsize them...either to say 3X8 or 4X9 tall pots, or to buy a few cases of 20oz Gatorade and drink them all quickly.

@miamicuseI think the 3x3x8 are about the same size as your soda bottles, so probably no point in stepping up to that.  Honestly I'd be thinking of a regular deep-style 1g pot.  In theory a deep pot is better, in practice does it make enough of a difference to be worth the extra expense?  Dunno.  Greenhousemegastore used to be fairly priced on Steuwe pots, but they got bought out last year by some other company and tripled their prices.  I haven't found a different source yet, but I planted a bunch of stuff so I haven't needed to buy additional pots.

Did you ever figure out what they are?  It's definitely not Sumawongii, but that one might be big enough for someone here to get an ID for you.

I am not sure what they are.

I had another thread in the palms forum asking about this some time ago here.  They are bigger seedlings now but still not much distinquishing characteristics.

Yeah I remember that thread a while back, it's why I was wondering.  It still doesn't look like a specific species to me.  If I had to guess I'd think maybe Spinosa or Aurantiaca/Paludosa.

I wonder how much longer before it can be IDed.

I'd be inclined to plant one somewhere part-shady.  It'll probably grow faster in the ground than in a pot, maybe by the end of summer you'd be able to post new photos and get an ID from a Licuala expert.

May be I will do just that.  I need to find a spot for it.  Full shade or part shade you think? Or one each?

I'd put one in full shade and another in a spot with AM sun and PM shade.  That'll also be helpful for later plantings, as you can judge how much sun they will want in your yard.
