Sabal Minor

So I’m pretty impressed and happy with what I got in the mail today! Got my first Sabal Minor, from a place called Northeast Ohio Palms… Not only did they ship this 30lb 7gal Sabal for free, (cheapest 5 gal I’ve had shipped from anywhere was 95$), but it is larger than the photo, very healthy, and from what I can see there are 4 different plants in the pot. Unless this is how they grow? I should be able to separate no problems? I Think $149 with free shipping.l for this specimen is Outstanding. How root sensitive are these things, should I separate or let grow as clump?

Cool I've seen their stuff.  Shipping one like that is $$$$$$.    You better grow it as is because separating will mean high chance of death.  If you don't want as many I'd sacrifice by chopping one below soil line instead.

If that’s the case I’ll just let it grow, may the strongest survive, it will be one hell of a sable bush someday.

Sabal minors are known to be sensitive to root disturbance.  Having said that, I have had pretty good luck repotting, with some root disturbance as well as wild digging smaller ones  and getting them to live. If the roots are not too entwined with each other it should be easier. So I guess I am saying just be extra careful.

What Allen said :greenthumb:

I purchased a needle from them a year and a half ago. Similarly impressed with the health and size. About ready to do it's 2nd winter in ground zone 6:greenthumb:

I gently dug down just a little and they’re not separating easy they’ve been together a long time I’ll just let them do their thing. I’ll plant it out in spring.

I'm guessing he puts multiples in pots because they can look kinda sparse as singles until they get some size

Works for me I was just expecting 1 in a 7g, and it’ll be a beast in a few years.

Nice one. Looks super healthy. Sabal minors are under utilized as a small accent palm (in my opinion) up here. They just grow so slow up here... nice to start with a bigger one like you have.

There is a large triple Sabal minor by my house and it looks great. Definitely leave them alone, you won’t be disappointed.

Youre not the first person to report the quality of the plants that person is selling. I’d love to buy some but I have so many minors and needles already. Half of them grown by seed by me.
