Hearing Mauna Loa is stirring again..  Figured it might be wise to launch a thread on it, just in case..  Hopefully this will be a small, and non-threatening eruption.. 🤞

Hey MooseMan,

There had been an increase in earthquakes this past month - so not a complete surprise. And it was long overdue by historical standards. But it will still be a surprise as to what happens from here. Advertised as the largest volcano on the planet, there can be large lava flows, and where they will end up going is anyone's guess at this point.

Here is a pic from our local WalMart parking lot last night. We are protected here from any lava flows in Kailua-Kona town by another volcano. But the glow can still be seen over the ridge. And here is a second pic from the north end of the island - about 100 miles away from Mauna Loa to get an idea of how large it really is.

Watching this very closely as reports are saying that the eruption has now entered into the North East Rift Zone which eventually heads downhill to Hilo.  For anyone who wants accurate local sourced information, I recommend Hawaii Tracker - https://www.hawaiitracker.com/

Good Luck Jason - not the best location for Hilo to have any major flow starting from. Hopefully the situation will become clearer in the next few days. Fingers crossed.

If you're Hawaiian, ..and/ or have family that is Hawaiian, it is on your bingo card,  every year.  ..Same w/ legit hurricanes hitting one ..or some.. of the islands..  Wayy overdue for the latter.

When it comes to natural disasters, there isn't anything i can think of,  that isn't on my personal card each year.. Bingo is: "Southern California slammed by cat 2 Hurricane that dumps 20" of rain across San Diego and L.A., a week or two before another causes widespread 10 thousand year flooding across central and southern Arizona"  🤞 🤞 One of these days.... 😀

Went up last to view from adjacent "dormant" volcano Mauna Kea. About 20 miles away - good view from about 9000 ft. - not the best for iPhone camera. Short video attempted with iPhone through telescope. Pics don't capture the "awesomeness."

Hurricanes are not good. Earthquakes are damn scary. Volcano eruption‘s are absolutely insane. We can only pray for the best for our Hawaiian contingent.

Just an interesting shot I thought to share showing perspective of what is going on. This is from almost 50 miles away.
