Dark patches from cold…

See this most years on a bunch of sabals I’ve got. Get these dark patches on the leaves that fade back to normal usually after a warmer day with sun. This has never ended up permanently affecting the leaves, like turning brown prematurely, they always go back to normal green. Seems early and temps are too warm to happen. Usually see this occur when we have dips into single digits. Anyone else see this??16BB67A1-D75D-4776-B395-A20489849CB6.thumb.jpeg.49405f4685ee6eb21c28b54a7f9a7e28.jpeg5CE800FD-A731-44CC-A6B7-3CF482E1E8A6.thumb.jpeg.b4df234edbe7d2de32174f921c0b761a.jpegAC1203C2-A2B8-4F75-A5D2-1D61F7CEA1E6.thumb.jpeg.eedc67144d61f52fe1a92f6e142c811c.jpeg

Yep I got those on my Trachy and minors last year with no damage resulting. The needle that showed that ended up frying.

I’ve also seen it on my needle palms. Was your needle a small one that fried?

I’m not home to look at mine right now but that seems like a lot of dark.  Did it go away?  I don’t think mine did this yet but I wasn’t out there looking during that last cold

I checked this morning when I left for work and they looked the same. Definitely excessive I would say, got my attention for sure.

I haven’t covered anything but as of Sat the only damage I have that I know of is the top of the mule browned in spots from the cold.  The butia  looked fine.  Pretty sure the sabal hybrids look untouched.   I’ll have to double check the palmetto.  The damage you have is unusual.  Are new fronds like that too?  Did you have hail?

No hail, we did get a heavy frost a few mornings and I think a day or two that it may have not gone above freezing. Really nothing crazy for this time of year though.

Not happy you had the same thing happen, but at least someone else is seeing the same thing. Hope the washie comes through winter, are you going to wrap it?

Yep thanks I hope so, I have a bunch of washies of the same size in the ground, and some of them will be eventually wrapped if the temperature drops below criticals but some of them, including this one, are intentionally left to their own devices

  • 2 weeks later...

I have some Date palm hybrid strap leafs in pots I leave out in the morning frost and they get the dark green  blotches almost every morning and recover every day when it warms up.  But around here it always warms up and we never have freezes that last all day.
I am keeping the date hybrids to get a male to go with the Medjoul female I bought.  Unless there is lots more global warming I will not get eatable dates around here but who knows in another few decades so I might as well give the girl a boyfriend.
