Dark Brown tinting on Royal Fronds

Recommended Posts

Hello friends

It’s been a week with overnight lows of mid thirties… some of the leaf tips on 2 of my royals are turning deep brown/purple - almost like they got “burned” …pictures attached, I’m talking specifically about the darkening starting to spread from tips.

is this a result of the cold and will these bounce back come spring?

Thanks!!

Jon

Should be hardy down to mid-20s. Fronds on my royals always look “frazzled” every spring. Part cold damage (from cold dry winds) part potassium deficit. Your royals will grow out of it come spring.

I'd like to be under the sea in an octopus' garden in the shade.

Thanks it shouldn’t get that low but I’m hopeful things don’t drop more - would wrapping in large Xmas lights be helpful?

Throw an old bed sheet over the canopy and tie it around the trunk if you get low temps.

Shouldn't be necessary. And never wrap lights directly on the palm. Always place over fabric wrapped first. Never cover palm directly with plastic, which can transmit cold damage worse than no cover at all.

Is there any reason to think increased watering will help or is that not a factor? - we had heavy rain last week so it should be well saturated
