Birds nesting in palms

Yesterday I observed a hummingbird nest in the tall kentia palm pictured (not mine), growing in a San Francisco backyard (seemingly without much if any supplemental water at this point).768338547_PXL_20230101_2036349793.thumb.jpg.98e2bc76df1e906a97774026c6070dcc.jpgNot sure if this should've been a continuation of the "garden visitors" topic, but it's a specific curiosity so I started a new topic.

I couldn't get a picture of the nest or the birds themselves.

Anyone care to share observations of birds nesting in palms?

I have had a hummingbird nest on a Chamaedorea frond,a crow next in the crown of a Trachycarpus. and a third, medium sized nest of unknown bird species.

Some of you may remember the San Diego garden of Jim Wright, whose back garden was an organized jungle of Howea forsteriana and Rhopalostylis palms, among others. It was not unusual to see hummingbird nests at eye level in his garden. It seemed quite remarkable, but his garden was a deeply layered canopy and made a fine shelter for small wildlife.

I'm growing several Howea myself, still not very tall, and have yet to spot a nest, but I keep checking. 😊

This past summer on a visit to HD I noticed one of the foxtails for sale in the garden center had signage warning customers of a hummingbird nest on one of the fronds. I just looked for the photos that I took of it to share here but unfortunately I must have erased them. I also recall seeing a hummers nest on a roebelleni frond at my work last year. Hummingbirds zooming around our garden are a daily appearance as they usually go from flower to flower of our aechmea blanchetiana, but ironically I have yet to notice them nesting in our palms.

No hummingbirds here in Hawaii, but we find bird nests of many types in palms - both on the fronds and woven in infructescence. - gmp
