Palm Identification - Veitchia?

BillAndy

Recommended Posts

I came across these trees at my dads apartment in FL and noticed they were dropping seeds. I am thinking they might be some type of veitchia, but hoping someone can assist in correctly identifying the species.    They’re on the boarder of zone 9B and 10A and about 20ft tall, if not more. Thanks for any info you might be able to offer.

@813PalmsnCycads Welcome to PalmTalk!  Definitely looks like Veitchia, but I wouldn't be able to tell you which species.  Interested to see if anyone will weight in with a different species than @idontknowhatnametuse mentioned.

Thanks for the input, V. Joannis seems to fit. Not knowing too much about Veitchia, I originally thought Montgomery only bc that is the only other species I had heard of. It seems like Joannis is little more cold hardy and I’m on the boarder of 9B and 10A, so Joannis is more likely to be thriving at this location.

Agree on Veitchia, although I think V arecina is more likely based on the fronds and fruit. V. joannis tends to have leaflets dropping well below horizontal (like H. forsteriana or C. onilahensis ‘weeping form’).
