Very well done Allen, you always surprise everyone with the beautiful palms you have. Especially since your palms and all have seen temperatures in the negatives before so you do a good job protecting them every year.

I've always looked forward to the day I could easily walk under my palms and consider them 'trees' and now I have 4 in that category.  Mule and 3 Trachy.

The variety and health of all those plants is fantastic. Everything placed and lit beautifully…was Spring cleanup more involved this year than usual? Regarding the Butia, how do you maintain that one…told the story before…I’ve got a strap leafed two year old in ground. It was planted by a squirrel that raided seeds I was trying to germinate…came out one morning and they were all gone! Found one as a 6” strap growing beside the deck the following spring…it wintered in the dirt so hoping for good genes…if you can grow that one in your colder than my zone 7, guess I stand a chance?

It gets winter covered/heated.   Main work was on other plants I don't post here like bushes/holly trees/crepe myrtle that got winter damage

I have clay and don't amend the holes but use ample pine bark mulch on top.   Most of the areas are raised a few inches and when I fixed them initially I mixed in 'soil conditioner' (Pine fines) a few inches deep and one area stump grindings.

Allen, do you leave most of your elephant ears in ground and mulched over winter? Do you let first frost shut them down then cut low and mulch over?

YES - You can mulch them after frost if you want but the varieties I have will come back without it.   A good 3" of wood mulch in zone 7A can't hurt though.

Thanks! That is a Phoenix roebelenii and I bring it in at 32F or so and put in my unheated garage under a light.  I have two viewers in zone 6 that box these in and they do great that way because they don't grow fast/tall.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9PaVcxFDRo

Well the 8'+  butia is already covered although it didn't need to be yet.  I went on a Vac in early Dec and decided to cover it.  it is still covered.  The mule probably will need to be covered a couple times minimum and the Trachy 50/50.  The weather forecast looks good thru mid Jan.  That leaves about 4 weeks past Jan 15th that could have a event that might affect the Trachy and 8 weeks for something that might affect the butia and mule.   Sometimes covering stuff depends on my travel schedule as I don't trust forecasts too far out.   On a side note I still have unprotected Elephant ears alive in a couple spots.
