So I just picked up this Ponytail Palm up from Lowe's for half off because it seems to have some rotting issue with the trunk. Half of the trunk is very spongy. I scraped all the spongy stuff off and now I got to some hard trunk in the middle. The crown looks very healthy. 20230305_161238.thumb.jpg.18cfe812b957d7b391f04e1ad9e6aa7b.jpg20230305_161244.thumb.jpg.764e1c7888bb0f842090f98aa235c456.jpg20230305_161252.thumb.jpg.3f061c9f2704d1124d82f4d63255c679.jpgY'all think it'll survive?

It looks like they "topped" it to force it to grow side branches, but didn't seal the top correctly with tar.  The trunk rot is "possibly fatal" but it might survive.  I have a 5' diameter 10' tall ponytail that got a chunk of tree dropped on it.  The damage took a big chunk out of the base, and exposed the spongy inside.  I treated it with a spray fungicide and routinely dusted it with sulfur powder.  A year later it had grown a hard trunk shell inside the spongy bit, which eventually turned to powder and fell away.  I'd hit it with hydrogen peroxide and sulfur powder and hope!
