Just got these two lovelies in the 15gal. Originally I had Best Tabs in mind (slow release 20-10-5) to drop into the soil. But was told by a nursery don't bother, since they don't dissolve effectively over time.

Got me thinking whether I could pepper in Palm Plus (13-5-8) into the soil mixed with Kellogg's Palm and Cactus mix.

Normally Palm Plus you season on top of soil after planting. But blended into planting soil? 🤔

Don't bother and overkill, or can't hurt?

Good to know.  Just wasn't sure if it was safe to pepper n mix in Palm Plus deep in the planting soil. If that makes sense. Typically I've only seen it used topical after planting.

Should be fine, no problem. For Sagos I hear fish emulsion to be among the best liquid feeds for them.

Sagos respond really well to fertilizer.

I don’t mix in any fertilizer when potting up my cycads. I do however throw a slow release (PalmGain or the like) on top at the same interval as my palms. I can’t tell you the difference between adding fertilizer or not as I’ve always used this routine. Palms and cycads/Encephalartos seem to like it.

When planting cycads in the ground i have blended something like the Mycorrhiza fungi mix below with the soil i intend to put around the rootball.  I use a time release fertilizer only in the top inch or two of soil.  Cycas revoluta aren't as particular as some cycads are about drainage and soil but its worth mentioning that if you do branch out into other cycads you will seek advice on soil and other planting tricks.
