Would the Teddybears do well if planted right beside eachother. Rootball to rootball making a double.

Another question is if A kentia and Teddybear could make a  nice healthy double?

Lastly would a Kentia look good in my climate in very little shade if it got some size and gets gradually exposed to more and more sunlight.

My second Kentia is outgrowing my Patio and is roughly 2 meters tall in total. I was thinking to plant it under the fronds of a washy however with time the Washy will go up so fast that it will not really shade the Kentia anymore.

I think a double Teddy would look great. Not sure if these were planted as a double but to me they look great in close proximity.

I'd say yes to the first two questions, though Durango gets cold in the winter. Still, worth a shot. I think your concerns about the Washie/Howea pair are well-taken, though a filifera might not put on height as fast.

Let us know how it goes.

Dave, Looks like really mild winter daytime temps with some nighttime chill. I bet he could pull off growing Teddy Bears.

There’s a double teddies planted a couple doors down from me.  Looks pretty nice.  They are middle age.  Adult trunks but not too tall yet, maybe 20 feet.  They kind of angle away from each other.  They are in their prime.

The Washy I am talking about is very much Robusta dominant and is among the fastest palms in my garden. So that should be fine.

As for the cold. Reading the freeze damage data it seemed hardy to my area and there is some Big Royals at certain places around the city growing exposed out in the open. They are not recent transplants. Those have stayed here for Many years and was planted as small palms.

Robilinis are plentiful here. I have also kept my licuala and bottlepalm outside all winter the last 2 years, no damage.

The issue for the Howea will be humidity or lack thereof.   If you get excessively dry they might not like it.  The best areas in California for them are areas with some marine influence on humidity.  They want increasing shade as you move into the warmer zones which also coincide with less marine influences on humidity.   On the coast here in San Diego, they can be full sun planted relatively young but need progressively more shade as you move inland.

Good luck with the plantings and keep a thread on their progress so others can learn from your experience.

They grow really well here in Shade. It will take a few years before the Robusta will be so high above that it barely casts shade so It will be a fairly big specimen by then, so hopefully it will do well. There is also other palms in the vicinity that will give some shade as well.

Got a question is there a point where Kentias really speed up their growth? If so at approximately what size?

Yea I will make a thread and post some photos once I got it in the ground.
