Hunting for some CA native trillium chloropetalum, I inquired at a local nursery and was told by a knowledgeable employee that it doesn't really grow here in zone 10b in coastal SF (borderline 10a). He'd actually attempted, and had one or two come up in a pot one season and that was it.

Anyone growing any species of trillium successfully in zone 10?

Chris,  this might be good advice.  I have found natives to be more exacting in their requirements than one would suppose.  I tried yerba buena, and they all died immediately.  I also failed to germinate seeds of Clintonia andrewsiana.   Perhaps you could try other Trilliums that are commonly sold by mail order/online nurseries.  They would have an incentive to sell more reliable and tolerant species.

Another example is Oxalis oregana, the form with the green abaxial side does not flourish in a garden setting, and one should purchase only the form with the maroon backside.   I have both forms in my garden.  The green one is the same surface area after many years while the maroon one is increasing in size.

If you haven't yet, would look through info on the Genus from the Pacific Bulb Society..

Also, for western natives, Telos Rare Bulbs is the best go-to source.  A couple other mail order places that sell CA. native Bulbs, but can't remember where they're located atm.
