Here are my 2 year old seedlings in gallon pots. These spend the vast majority of time outside, and only get moved to an unheated shelter when weather dictates. The growth difference is quite noticeable. The leaves are stiff, short and the overall character is rather squat looking with a thick (for it's size) base.

Mine are in a heated room under grow lights. They never stop growing. Mine are in very loose soil and get fish emulsion and seaweed foliage spray once a month.

I'm beginning to think so too. Would an Alexander be a better choice for cooler summers?

Not really and they are extremely root sensitive. I dug up and potted a couple dozen Archo alex seedlings two weeks ago - not one survived.

If you can find one, perhaps try spindle or bottle palm (Hyophorbe) if you must have a pinnate, crown shafted palm. People have posted they do reasonably well in pots up north.

BTW, I can’t grow the Trachycarpus genus. My sandy alkaline soil is supposedly nematode-ridden and my endless summers too sweltering for them. No climate is perfect.

THanks for the reply. I would like a crown shaft palm that can adapt to cooler temps they look very tropical lol My pygmy unfortunately didn't survive. it got blasted with two days of a cold rain ... i will look into those. My soil is quite sandy so much so that I have to add some 3 in one mix every three or so summers. that sticky sweltering heat is too much for us Northerners lol. If you want a break from it. Canada is a great place to visit and explore...I hope your are well and healthy :D

Here are some 3 year old Windmills (1 gal. pots) treated much the same as the 2 year olds in the above post.

Those too. I have one and I hate it. Use it to check out favorite news/palm sites when we are in a medical office or restaurant.

Well, if a Pygmy date can’t survive for you, not much hope for Hyophorbes. You must be careful never to expose a tropical weather palm to cold rain, even during a Canadian summer. You will have to keep it indoors or under a roof if inclement weather is expected. Cold rain will kill it almost as fast as a freeze.

Christmas Palms 😝

Funny thing is, it sounds insane but you can probably plant a christmas palm into the ground and have it survive the winter, it should be not very easy but possible, just have a foam board enclosure with a heater or a bunch of heating lights in there. Hope that palm can survive high humidity, and possibly cover the root ball in like heat wire or like a heating lights and turn them on during the winter. I sound crazy and this is off topic but I just had to share my idea 🙃.
