Dypsis lutescens San Diego, where to buy?

Good morning just checking with my San Diego folk where I can find some lutescens. No luck at the big box stores. Correct me if I’m wrong but seems like they used to have  them pretty frequently. Anyways just looking for any suggestions, thanks!

I believe forum member @Christopher Dillman recently searched our area for some lutescens (trying to find the largest / best price options, since he needed a lot). I'm tagging him on your post in case he wants to share what he found.

* As a FYI, the official name was recently changed to Chrysalidocarpus lutescens, but I doubt that name has made it to tags yet. You can also search for the nicknames "Areca Palm", or (less common in our area) "Butterfly Palm" or "Golden Cane" palm.

I personally got my lutescens at Home Depot (for cheap)... but don't recall seeing them at my local location in a while.

Thank you so much . I appreciate that and had no idea about the name change !

Just saw two of them for sale today at Home Depot in Rancho Mirage. They were in about a 10-15 gal (squat) container, obviously grown outside because they didn’t have the nice stretched sheen of greenhouse or Florida-grown plants. They were priced about $135.00 if I remember correctly. Maybe 5-6’ overall including the pot. They were densely planted in the pot and not the best but first time I’ve seen them here sold as anything other than a houseplant. I start mine from little houseplant multis and split them up, acclimate and grow out to take our conditions…but if you’re in a hurry of course that’s not going to do. I’m assuming if they hit this HD they’re probably arriving at other HDs across SoCal. What was crazier was a half dozen Ravenala 8’ overall height for $200 a pop. I did a double-take on that and had to make sure via the label in case I was having delusions looking at a mutant Strelitzia.

Hey Stacey, thanks for the tag. :)

I have a dypsis lanceolata. Amazingly doing ok in these colder March temps in San Diego. Been in the ground for almost two years now. From Rancho Soledad nursery. Gets hit with morning sun, then plenty of shade from nearby Caryota and neighbors Jacaranda.

@Christopher Dillman - Thanks for responding. Your lanceolata is looking great 👍

@Corymon - I might have been thinking of someone else who was shopping the area for lutescens recently. What I recall was that all the ones he saw were very expensive... $400 for a large pot if I'm recalling correctly. Like you, he was having trouble finding them at the big box stores.

My lutescens were just from Home Depot - bought a couple years ago. They're currently sitting in pots waiting for their turn to go in. I originally bought two buckets and split them into 4 buckets + a few stragglers. Here's one of my groupings (looking slightly burned coming out of winter, but not too bad)...

If it were me, I'd try to hunt down a Home Depot location that has them... or try to special order it. It's common enough that they should be able to order it. I know my Home Depot (in Encinitas) will do special orders.

You may want to also try Briggs Nursery. Or (slightly more expensive) Anderson La Costa will do special orders.

Jungle Music also has them in stock right now, but they're more expensive so I personally would just get rare plants there.

Hope that helps!

My bad. Just now saw Areca palm and realized it's a dypsis lutescens. Still learning to speak latin..

That Dypsis I found at Tony's Tropicals in Vista. Be prepared you will find alot of Arecas beat up in this cold spell. Yet Tony as I recall had some big ones when I was last there a few weeks back.

Ah yes, that was the one. I seem to recall it being a lot more expensive than what Home Depot sells them for though. Do you remember the price?

Wish I made note of what I paid at HD, but I'm pretty sure it was under $200 (possibly under $100).

20gal Arecas at 195. I think he also has smaller ones.

@Christopher Dillman - For a 20G that’s a great price! Posted Jungle Music price is $500 for 20G / $225 for 15G. Though JM is of course higher than most. My HD ones were less $ than this, but mine were 15G if I’m remembering right.

@mnorell said the HD near him has them at $135 for squat 10-15G .

@Corymon - Here’s the nursery mentioned.. Hope that helps!

Cambridge Nursery in Orange has 15G lutescens for $75. Good price if u are up North. That’s where I got mine.

Lutescens is under rated if u ask me. Especially if they are shade grown. Spectacular….

@iDesign thank you very much!! That was very kind of you to remember and go above and beyond ! I will start with seeing if HD would be willing to special order a few for me to save a bit of $$$ otherwise I’ll venture to one of the specialty stores listed above !
