Awesome! Did you grow this from seed or did you buy it? It's gonna be a monster once it establishes itself I presume 😍😂

I’ve got a few in the ground. One coming up on its second summer, the other 3 entering their first full summer. The first one is really starting to speed up. Still pretty small but I have big expectations for it this year. It sailed through our Christmas cold snap that burned a mule pretty badly and defoliated a large nearby CIDP.

they're winners in my book!

I just ordered some seeds on ebay, I'm hoping they're legit. I actually bumped another thread about it not knowing you've made this one lol

I haven't seen these for sale anywhere. My apprehension with buying more unusual sabal seeds or small plants is always whether or not they're the real thing, and not generic palmetto seeds.

I'd like to try these here in the San Antonio area, I've read they're pretty hardy and get huge. I've never seen any planted here.

There used to be a quite large specimen at the SA Botanical Gardens.  It was trying to recover from Feb. 2021 9°F freeze the last time I was there but I believe that it was finally taken out.  I collected and germinated seeds from that palm.

Nice!

That's unfortunate about the causiarum at SA Botanical Gardens. How big are your seedlings now?

They're just 3-4 strap leafers and were recently planted in the ground along with two older seedlings.

If you were planting along a fence, what distance from the fence would you plant this species?

I love how the trunk shows the speed like it grows to quick that the bands don’t have time to perfectly cross like a palmetto and the canopy is so beautiful 😍

Not as hardy, but no slouch. It’s a solid 8b palm, warm 8a should be okay. Damage seems show up in the low teens.

Definitely not as hardy as Palmetto. My Causiarum spear pulled at a quick 15° cold snap. It's also still has a subterranean trunk.

My first one panted probably saw same temps and looks nearly flawless, smaller then yours. I’ll grab a pic of it this weekend, the Cidp down the road is burnt to a crisp. 🤷‍♂️

My causiarum was planted as a strap leaf palm in june 2011 I think.  so it is almost 12 years in the ground.  It took cat one hurricant winds of Ian last fall and is cranking out new leaves seemingly faster than ever.  You can see the leaves that are laying down, splitting of petioles in Ian.   The trunk is over 40" diameter at the thickest point down low.  It now self cleans leafbases, and has around 14" clean trunk.  My guess it is ~30'IMG_9184.thumb.JPG.f4dcb69077c8d990094417cb0da3741d.JPG tall.

Palmetto is more hardy, but there appears to be a big variation in Sabal causiarum's cold hardiness at or below 15F.

I would agree that Causiarum is definitely more leaf hardy then CIDP. All date palms in our area were 100% burnt but all just about are pushing new green fronds. I was really hoping all the palms I had planted at my new place wouldn't see a 9a winter for sometime. Mother nature not playing nice.

Not for me.  19F killed two and the third is in the ICU, and it was protected with frost cloth and mini lights below 28F.

Really one of the most majestic palms, and it was pretty thrilling to me that it was so cold tolerant when I was living in the Deep South with fairly few options to grow. Definitely not one to denigrate just because "it's only a Sabal." I have waxed enthusiastic over this one on several other threads so won't drone on, but pertinent to the above discussion, my experience was that they were very reliably hardy when grown in Natchez, Mississippi (z9a), no damage after 2010's 18F extended (3-day) freeze, and they did show some leaf damage on lower leaves at 13F in 2018 there, but nothing too significant and they grew right out of it. One of the fastest growers (1gal to 25' or so in about a decade in that drippy, warm humid climate) and just not a complainer about anything. I'm thinking that Chester's loss in Oregon has to do with the constant extreme chill and many frosts/freezes, snow, etc. in Oregon getting through this historically long and chilly winter that has in one way or another gripped the entire west. It is probably not a palm very happy living in a refrigerator/freezer for long, and expects a nice long, warm spring-summer-fall to recoup and refresh.  I would assume something like S. bermudana would be a better one to trial in the PNW.

How long had it been in the ground? Perhaps still getting it’s feet wet?

Which is interesting as we have confirmed we have seedlings of the same batch from josh. More at play then ultimate lows .

This was exactly the problem !!! It was its first winter in the ground. The coldest most open area of my yard as far as palms planted. Also the only palm that got zero protection so all in all I'm not shaming it at all. Was just surprised as I considered it bulletproof for our area.

Yeah I hear ya, 15 though is border line 8a/b. Not sure if you got the winds too but it was windy as heck here. Any signs of a spear booking through? Mine have started moving already. Probably 3” of growth on the newest planted ones and 5” on the single larger established one.

It's been growing reasonably well, and has seen 23F (1 hour) before, but not lower than that.  I have to think it was the combo of cold and very high winds, as well as 60 hours below freezing.  I saw some discoloration in the spear immediately after and it was as dry cold event surprisingly.  Then the wet comes back followed by two lesser cold snaps where we got down to 23F and 25F.  I guess this was the limits in my climate.  My uresana was killed too, both had been in the ground for around 3 years and seemed to be doing well enough until this winter.

At least I have some other Sabal species that handled it well, with a newly planted S rosei being the big surprise

Where did you get the palm? I’ve heard on here there has been confusion by seed sellers on identifying these compared to other Sabals like domingensis etc. I think Joe at NTCHP ran into that and was growing palms that weren’t causiarum. Granted if it’s still small I can see any palm potentially take damage and spear pulling.

Posted

Causiarum and Mauritiiformis are the only two Sabals I have in the ground.  I planted a large strap leafer in the front yard in December 2019, and it's opening fronds about 6' tall now.  The other two went into the ground around October 2021 and are growing rapidly on the West side.  Oddly enough I think they are growing faster in pretty dense shade, though the soil is also a lot richer over there.  So they definitely like that combo.

This week I visited a stand of very old Sabal causiarums at sunset in Aguadilla PR with IPS VP Andy Hurwitz and his wife Arlene.

I have also grown some from seed and they are still seedlings. Have the same question about where to plant. 😂 They actually seem rather fast for a Sabal.

Mine are in small grow bags but they throw new leaves out left and right especially when it’s hot, I think I get a new leaf every 2 weeks or so during summer 😍

This is a bad photo because it's night time and they are covered in pollen but these are my 2 causiarum 😍

I personally think causiarum have a distinctive look to them even in the strap leaf stage like something about the growth point and the way the leaves are shaped, I'm gonna take a photo of the causiarum and the palmetto together tomorrow which are roughly the same age for comparison, that tiny plant next them are a palmetto but isn't a fair comparison since it's younger
