Hi everyone! It’s been a few years since I been on here and I’m happy I’m back ! I just planted a coconut palm yesterday in my yard . I live in Sanford Fl. If you look at the bottom photo can see my Royal in the back . I planted that 5 years ago and has grown almost 15 feet since !

Nice looking palm. How low do you get each winter?

I had a coconut palm killed by a below freezing night because I didn't protect it. Do you plan to protect yours?

They will spot and yellow at temps in the 40s. Fortunately, they grow quickly when temps heat up again.

I absolutely plan to protect this coconut ! I just planted it yesterday so it has 8-10 months for the roots to establish and the hot summer ! Anything you recommend to protect it with ?

@pj_orlando_z9b has a great wrap and protection method for his Cocos, I think it has been doing great for at least 5 or so years?

@Walt has documented how he protects his coconut palm through the years. Try searching for his posts.

I protect mine in palm coast every year. I’m north of Daytona beach. I just use deck screws and big bamboo poles to build a box for it. Tie up the fronds, throw incandescent Christmas lights inside and wrap in landscape fabric. The same stuff they use as weed matting.

I can try to get some pics in the next few days. I planted it 2 years ago it’s not fat but it’s trunking. It got burnt back a little one night I didn’t protect it we got to like 35 with frost. But it’ll be super huge by June.

Pushing 8 years.  I typically go with C9s under burlap but will likely stop as I'm getting burn marks from a few bulbs.  With the forecasted bad cold of Christmas, I built a frame and added supplemental heat for the trunk and meristem. Really helped as temps inside the frame were 60s when air temp was low 40s. Here is setup and palm today. Most damage is from existing fronds out at that time and are pushing through now. New growth has been healthy since Jan.

Christmas weekend was pretty cold for me too, though I didn't quite hit 24 in my backyard.  I have an Ambient Weather WS-3000-X3 with 2 extra temp sensors.  So it's a 5 channel datalogger with sensors calibrated in the fridge (34F) and freezer (2F) to make sure they are very accurate on freezes.  I bought it a couple of years ago and on the first freeze discovered that my back yard is about 2-4F colder than the front yard.  This made a difference for me on some sensitive palms.  For example, a Dypsis (Chrysalidocarpus) Onilahensis in the front yard was slightly damaged in the below cold front, but an identical one in the backyard was killed.

40s for highs. Low 30s for lows.  2 days of 38 for an avg temp. What a crazy 2 days! I'm in Belle Isle.

WOW! That’s an amazing specimen. Are these coconuts viable/do they have water in them when they’re still green(as for coconut water) or when matured?

I do get water but they do not ripen fully.
