OUR MAY 20, 2023 MEETING IN RIVERSIDE CALIFORNIA

BACK IN THE SADDLE AGAIN

We have not forgotten about you-all in the Inland Empire and Los Angeles Counties! During the Covid pandemic, LA and Riverside and San Bernardino Counties had difficulty managing protocols and it was evident that planning meetings in places like them was risky because there was no telling whether or not a county directive might have required us to call off the meeting at the last moment because of a spike in cases. Orange and San Diego had managed to avoid crises, at least most of the time.

Our goal is to get back out with a vengeance. This is the start. If you have a garden in Riverside, San Bernardino, Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara County, and you want to host us LET US KNOW!

THIS MEETING AT A NEVER-BEFORE-HOSTED GARDEN

This garden in Riverside has never hosted before. It's located at 6108 Pachappa Drive, Riverside CA, 92506. The home was built in 1945 and is owned by Fred Crane, who started the garden 31 years ago, in 1992.  The property is on over 5 acres. Five. Acres. Expletives and exclamations are expected from small lot dwellers. Even from half-acre denizens like me. With this much time and space mature palms abound.  Brahea brandeegii (c. 70 years old), a "mated" pair of Bismarckia nobilis - male and female, Chameadoreas, big Acellerraphe wrightii ("Everglades palm"), Arenga engleri, Sabal causerinum, Chambeyronia macrocarpa,  Rhapis multifida, Livistona decoras, Trachycarpus wagnerianus, Trithrinax acathacoma Phoenix and a big, gorgeous Pritchardtia, you tell us what it is aside from big and gorgeous.

Thanks to Don Kona Merhaut for setting this up!

POTLUCK LUNCH

We'll be having a potluck lunch with chicken provided. Bring your favorite dish to share; meat, vegetables, dessert, or any combination all greatly appreciated. Make it yourself, or buy and bring it - if you like it, we will too! If it's grandma's favorite recipe, so much the better. We don't care if your grandma was from Chenzen, Chicago or Copenhagen. Come feast on food, and the joint joys of palms and good fellowship on a glorious almost-summer day.

AUCTION

There will be an auction at this meeting. Donors have a choice of donating 100% of the proceeds to the PSSC (we appreciate that!) or 50% (we appreciate that, too!) The focus is on rare palms, in 1 to 5 gallon containers, though larger ones will be accepted. Also good are nice palm-themed objects d'art, and other exotic plants, including but not limited to, bromeliads, fancy Ficus, etc. We accept credit cards, checks, and good old cash, though, due to expenses relating to credit card transactions, we greatly appreciate cash and checks, if possible.

The auction is a major and vital part of the PSSC's funding, and the recent forced hiatus in meetings and auctions were painful. The recent "re-start" auctions have helped a great deal, but more is needed; your participation by donating and buying will help a great deal. If you have a question about a possible donation, contact Dave at 323-481-5071 via text or email at urkurk2000@gmail.com.

Since we have a limited time in which to conduct the auction, we ask that donors provide plants that will realistically sell for at least $20. Please no Washingtonias, Phoenix canariensis, etc. We also appreciate liners and "freebie" plants as well for the plant raffle.

Thanks to all of our donors!

ITINERARY:

9:30 AM: Board of Directors Meeting
11 AM: General Members arrive at the garden, tour it and swoon.
12:30 PM: Potluck lunch. Tables and chairs will be available. Bring your food item! Eat!
1:00 PM: Begin General Meeting. Announcements, Auction and Raffle
4:00 PM: Meeting adjourns

Seriously I need to make it to this one. It's so close to my place! Hopefully I can get some babysitting so I can go. Furthermore I would host a meeting at my place but I have lots of work to do. My small backyard needs a bit of a remodel and honestly I don't think my garden compares to most I've seen around SoCal.

@Chris Chancehope you can make it! Nice and close to you for a change.

We're trying to get out there a lot more than we used to; if you can think of any cool gardens to host, do please advise!
