My garden pictures from coastal Tasmania

The garden is 15 years old and my climate is cool humid oceanic and frost free with little extremes of temperature.

All the Lord Howe Island palms and cloud forest palms grow like escapees in the ground.

Troy is the best gardener.  It was he who enlightened me about the use of kelp extract.  I was also the beneficiary of his most generous hospitality several years ago !   :greenthumb:

Beautiful Troy! I'm so jealous of all your Lord Howe and Nikau palms, they just look perfect in your area.  Mine grow well here in San Diego, but will never match yours.  Would love to visit if I ever get out to Tasmania!

Gorgeous garden with gorgeous palms Troy. I envy your frost free climate.
Even though our climates are similar, I still have to consider a bit of canopy protective area for my Howeas and Hedyscepe from a frost perspective and from the odd 40C plus day we get every few years here. Yours look perfect.

Awesome Troy! It’s easy to look at your garden and think that you must have an ideal palm growing climate, but I appreciate the challenges that you’d have particularly with lack of heat and that makes it even more impressive.

Troy I was wondering if you are able to grow bismarkias (lack of heat?) or if you have one already? The silver/blue palmate leaves would contrast nicely with your garden.

Definitely no chance for Bismarckia in Tasmania. They are marginal here in Melbourne and we have quite a bit more heat.

Someone's attempting to grow one in my cool weather San Francisco neighborhood. Nice to see something different, but it's not looking good.

This is a dreamy garden, and Tasmania looks to have a gorgeous landscape. The cooler zones of Oceania hold a particular allure.

Your garden looks amazing never thought living in Tassi could be so tropical looking! You have done a great job at transforming your yard into what it is now, if you're like me you will never sell the place, it is now a part of who you are.

Awesome Troy

Your garden has always been a delight, and now with so many palms well overhead, it has achieved sanctuary status. My favorite view has always been of the walled area with the 3 chairs and table now tucked under the tree fern and palms among the succulents. Five stars, and thanks so much for the update.

Yes takes a lot longer than Hawaii to achieve overhead status 🙌

Bismarck I have tried and not enough heat to grow and they just end up going backwards and eventually die

Thanks Troy.  Makes sense now that you weather is more like cloud forest hence why you have the most beautiful textbook hedys I've ever seen. Keep up the great garden.

Cheers

What are the averages for the hottest month of the year where you are? I have a potted Bismarckia that grew a good amount (at least for this latitude) that is outside in a pot. It is worth mentioning that last summer was the hottest on record though here so maybe that's why. This spring has been awful but the Bismarckia is slowly making progress on pushing out a new frond.

Troy, I remember those early posts of your garden…my, my, how well your plantings have grown. Your planning and placement have created a lush cool weather sanctuary. I think I know where your ‘happy place’ is. Good job and thanks for the update.

What a gorgeous garden. I am in Scamander and have planted out several Bangalow palms 12 months ago. We are very close to the ocean and I guess they get a lot of wind and sun damage.

What would you recommend for fertilising and protection?  We seldom get frost.
