Unfortunately, this is the only fool-proof way to shorten a fan palm...

Another one of my historic,  neighborhood fan palms bites the dust... Sad to see. I gauged the strength of storm winds by watching these palms in the distance. That's my livistona decora in the foreground.

Yes! I'm sure it was there for many decades.  A bit too tall to transplant, I guess.

:(

My first palm memories are of watching my neighbor's Mexican fans swaying wildly in the storm winds. I knew nothing about them as a child, other than that I was impressed by their pliability.

Actually, the local birds are very efficient Washingtonia seed distributors and/or planters, judging by how many palm volunteers pop up in my yard!😉

I was unable to copy&paste a link, but go to Youtube and search something like  "man cuts off top of palm tree".   Someone in Redlands, CA climbed an 90 feet tall Washingtonia robusta with a large lean in the trunk, and cut off the entire crown.  He then went for a crazy ride as the trunk whipped back and forth several times !

I seen that video and it was crazy! I don't live far from there. Some of those tree trimmers are nuts!

Amazing video. Glad the tree trimmer is OK. Still sad to see trees killed.
