Hoping someone on the board will know exactly what this is or what occurred with my triple robi? I'm in the Jacksonville, FL area and I fertilize quarterly so my palms are usually pretty healthy. This Robi was doing great, in fact last week it looked fine but yesterday I noticed the smaller third trunk looks very sick. The only thing that has occurred within the last week is we had quite a bit of rain and my only next thing to look at is to see if a downspout is blocked and water was hitting the top of this palm. I'm assuming if this trunk is dead I can just simple saw it off at the base & the other two trunks will be fine? I appreciate any info, thank you.

Yes to your question.

I would probably wait until July 4th to see if it recovers. JAX got pretty cold back in December; that may be the result.

The world would be a better place , if the Growers would stop doing the Triple thing , and sell healthy single Robellinis like

Mother Nature intended .

Yes you can cut off the dead one, it's not coming back.  These are 3 induvial palms from 3 seeds so one does not effect the others.

I had a triple that slowly became a lovely healthy single. Perhaps that's what's going on here.

But, I just purchased a lovely triple... so perhaps the same thing will happen again to me.

Yep, that trunk looks like it got a bud rot over the winter and died.  I'd treat all 3 trunks with hydrogen peroxide, just a decent sized squirt into the crown.  If it bubbles up then there's a fungal infection going on.  This happens a lot over the winter, even if there's not much visible cold damage.  There's a slight chance that the "dead" trunk will recover, but most likely the bud was killed and it'll grow no more new leaves.  Chopping it off near the base is probably the best bet.

It’s hard to tell from the picture but it looks like the smallest of the 3. A lot of times with triples, quads, doubles, etc…, the smallest will die off due to the other one(s) overpowering it. The roots are unable to compete and the growth is stunted. It leaves the runt susceptible to disease and insect damage. That seems likely here. Sometimes quads become triples then doubles eventually a single.
