I was admiring my mule palm earlier in the evening after I mowed the frontyard. 

It has grown so much since being planted 1.5 years ago. 

In fact, I don’t think it has lost any foliage yet. It just seems to add to its crown but not lose anything. It was in a relatively small container - maybe only 15G. I imagine its enjoying stretching its legs. 

Much to my delight, it has put on quite a show this spring with numerous inflorescence displaying a bouquet of cream-yellow flowers. 

Much like is often said, most of the fruit drops off well before maturity and simply dries up and becomes part of the organic matter in the mulch. The latest stalk has managed to retain 2 seeds. If they keep hanging on, I may plant them just to test if they’re sterile.

Are the spathes covered with a brown tomentum? Can you make a pic of them?

Carambeí, 2nd tableland of the State Paraná , south Brazil.

Alt:1030m. Native palms: Queen, B. eriospatha, B. microspadix, Allagoptera leucocalyx , A.campestris, Geonoma schottiana, Trithrinax acanthocoma. Subtr. climate, some frosty nights. No dry season. August: driest month. Rain:1700mm

 

I am seeking for cold hardy palms!
