I am starting a topic here on New Caledonia palms to call attention to the exciting tentative itinerary for the long awaited 2024 Biennial.

Please add photos of any New Cal palms you have seen anywhere.

Tell us your successes and hard luck stories trying to grow them so we can congratulate you (and learn hints to success) or join those of us who want to try some species again.

The list of endemic palms that are along the proposed day trips is amazing and I want to learn more to be able to recognize them in habitat.

Key points to distinguish the species at any size from your reading or growing experience would be a bonus.

Silly me, how could I forget the amazing topic Tim started only last November!?

Here’s the link!

My few palms don’t compare, but here goes. The current quite atypical hot dry spell is stressing them too.

Basselinia pancheri

I have a few more in the ground and in pots, but too hot mid day to leave my fan inside.

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Great link Bill! Thanks!

I enjoyed admiring your collection the Fall before COVID hit when the IPS had a Board meeting in San Diego.

Amazing what you can grow outside of the tropics!

Hi Cindy I find most of the New Caledonia palms grow quite well in my climate another grower conversation we had a few days ago we both concluded the Caledonia palms do better here on the mid north coast of Australia than they do in some gardens in New Caledonia obviously not ones in natural habitat in New Caledonia but his observation was and I agree that they were not growing as good as the ones in gardens compared to Australian conditions New Caledonia is the new Madagascar for palms the South Pacific islands were originally attached to Australia although a long time ago I also find palms from Madagascar grow quite (Oraniopsis is related to Orania a link is there see Gondwana) well in my region as my area has a latitude nearly the same as Madagascar longitude and latitude play a big part just an observation more so latitude iam no botanist just a self taught horticulturalist who loves gardening with a passion and 35 years of growing I learn something new every day about plants Mother Nature has ways of teaching us if we just observe Her

Most of the New Caledonian palms do quite well here although the higher altitude species need to be well watered on the really hot days.  I had not been able to make up my mind about attending the biennial, not wanting to leave my dogs, or  seeing many of my favourite palms in habitat.  Sadly the current disturbances, me being the cowardly type, plus an allergy to bullets, have made up my mind for me.  On a trip to Fiji many years ago I had to spend most of the time in my hotel room listening to martial sounds of a political uprising. Not an experience I care to repeat.   It's such a shame that it happened now as so many people were really looking forward to being there and seeing all the special palms.

Very unlikely, it’s about impossible to obtain. Ever even seen one here in RBGSYD etc ? There is a couple reason that is so.

The riots broke out months after the last ticket sold and currently it’s still going ahead. No decision has been made yet
