Our July 15, 2023 meeting will be at two gardens in "the OC"; Jerry and Alma Cabeje and Michael and Susan McGuire; the former in Santa Ana and the latter in Costa Mesa.

Garden One: The Home and Garden of Jerry and Alma Cabeje, 2701 Glenarbor Street, Santa Ana, CA 92704.
Front garden features a Bismarckia flanked by Pritchardia and Trachycarpus. There are numerous companion plants such as bromeliads, succulents, cactus and more jam-packed around more than 80 palm species in a standard city lot. Current star of the show is a Wallichia disticha with a triple inflorescence. Jerry has been planting palms since the late 90’s, and loves to propagate.

Garden Two: The Home and Garden of Michael and Susan McGuire, 3104 McKinley Way, Costa Mesa, CA 92626. The McGuire garden is also on a standard city lot, with plenty of gloriously non-standard palms to equally non-standard sizes, growing on it. Two 40 foot Roystoneas flank either side of the driveway. The "treelawn" is graced by a seeding Pritchardtia hillebrandtii, and a giant Parajubaea torallyi torallyi. Other highlights include a twenty foot tall trunking Chrysalidocarpus (Dypsis) leptocheilos or Teddy Bear near the driveway, and a towering Foxy Lady in the backyard, plus numerous other palms, bromeliads, and other wonderful tropical plants.

POTLUCK LUNCH

We'll be having a potluck lunch with chicken provided. Bring your favorite dish to share; meat, vegetables, dessert, or any combination all greatly appreciated. Make it yourself, or buy and bring it - if you like it, we will too! If it's grandma's favorite recipe, so much the better. We don't care if your grandma was from Chenzen, Chicago or Copenhagen. Come feast on food, and the joint joys of palms and good fellowship on a glorious almost-summer day.

AUCTION

There will be an auction at this meeting. Donors have a choice of donating 100% of the proceeds to the PSSC (we appreciate that!) or 50% (we appreciate that, too!) The focus is on rare palms, in 1 to 5 gallon containers, though larger ones will be accepted. Also good are nice palm-themed objects d'art, and other exotic plants, including but not limited to, bromeliads, fancy Ficus, etc. We accept credit cards, checks, and good old cash, though, due to expenses relating to credit card transactions, we greatly appreciate cash and checks, if possible.

The auction is a major and vital part of the PSSC's funding, and the recent forced hiatus in meetings and auctions were painful. The recent "re-start" auctions have helped a great deal, but more is needed; your participation by donating and buying will help a great deal. If you have a question about a possible donation, contact Dave at 323-481-5071 via text or email at urkurk2000@gmail.com.

Since we have a limited time in which to conduct the auction, we ask that donors provide plants that will realistically sell for at least $20. Please no Washingtonias, Phoenix canariensis, etc. We also appreciate liners and "freebie" plants as well for the plant raffle.

Thanks to all of our donors!
