Areca Vestiaria Decline

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have a small Areca Vestiaria on my front patio that I've had more than 2 years and it had been doing fine. Beginning a couple months ago, it has been in a steady decline as you can see in the photo. Am I overwatering it, underwatering it, too much sun? We did not have a freeze this past winter where I live (perhaps some mid-30's a couple times).

Any thoughts and recommendations? Thanks!

It looks to me like there's not enough soil in there. Its hard to tell but I think thats a half full 2 gallon pot? As long as the soil is quick draining keeping it moist is not a problem for these that I know of. You didn't mention how often or how much you water so I couldnt say if youre watering too much or too little. I water mine daily on a drip system. I think yours is desperately in need of a re-potting although it may be too late for that. Its worth a shot at least. Good luck!

Thanks! I will re-pot it right away. Watering is probably 1-2X per week.

Will see what happens!

Also check for spider mites - they seem to love the Areca genus. So do I but have trouble keeping them alive in pots. I’ve given up on A vestiaria in particular.

I had a couple of small Satakentia seedlings looking similar to your Areca after a week of negligence. The reason: SPIDER MITES.
