What to expect for Trachycarpus Fortunei growth in pot

I have a glorious and fast growing Trachycarpus fortunei, currently in good growing conditions.

My question is: how tall/how big is this tree going to continue to grow if it is roughly in a pot of 5.5 gallons (~21 L) of soil?

i understand to replant the palm when it is root-bound, however I’m wondering this current pot is going to yield a big tree or if it’s nearly maxed out on growing height in the current pot.

Pot Dimensions:

Circumference: 42 inches (106 cm)

height/depth of soil: 9.5 inches (24 cm)

Hard to tell unless you pull it out and look at roots.  The palms can stay in a pot a long time and just be root bound and slow their growth.  If you are considering planting it then it will grow faster in ground.  I planted one about that size last spring and you can see roots

Ay thanks buddy. Every palm I have repotted has roots popping out the water drainage holes before beginning to grow. I’m going to up the pot size so I can give this tree some height as well as a lot of green foliage. Thanks for the video I’ve watched it a million times though lmao

I have a friend who has raised them for several years. He has taught me the most. I'm in 7a and he is 8a. He says he recommends planting them in ground when they outgrow a 7 gallon pot. There us another person who has also raised said wait till they outgrow 15 gallons. I take the reason is usually by that size they are more cold hardy than say a small 1 or 3 gallon and chances of loosing a spear at a 7 to 15 gallon size decreases. I know many are successful at a small size. I think they are other factors such as your zone, protection etc. So occasionally I sell a few locally and it's near always people leaving I advise the 7 gallon before planting in ground and usually send them information on how to take care of them. Usually I send them Allen's videos. I like planting  them in ground late spring for my area, usually plant in May.

Both are extremely impressive trees! They must bring you so much joy to be able to sit back outside and enjoy the beauty of having a palm tree alive in an area where they don't  normally grow! What volume size wooden barrel is the trachycarpus fortunei in? even if you give the dimensions we can still calculate the volume lol.

Here are mine, which I've grown from a one gallon size purchased in May 2022. I've repotted them very steadily. Their root mass always impresses me. They winter indoors in a cooler room with lots of large windows, then spend mid May to mid October outdoors.

My trachycarpus fortunei has been in transplant shock for a while now (7 months?) after I re-potted it. It doesn’t have any spear pull or dying fronds it just stopped growing!

my Mexican fan palm is doing fantastic I just repotted it and excited to watch it grow bigger.

I'm in a cold climate, too, and they may not grow much over the fall and winter. Yours looks OK. Warmth, moisture, and fertilizer should get it going.

I actually need to find these a home. They're too big to bring back indoors. Anyone want them?
