Hi,

I went to a 100Yen-shop three days ago and while already lining up at the cashier, I glanced over to the very small plant section...

Something that looked like young palm seedlings caught my eye so I moved over there to give it a closer look.

I expected some C. lutescens seedlings which are sold everywhere for a couple hundred Yen...

But then I took one of them in my hand to read the label (this photo was later taken at home) and I almost had to read it twice...

The label says "Pritchardia"......!

I have never ever come across a Pritchardia palm in a home center or nursery (here or somewhere else in Japan) - so, for 100Yen five or

six seedlings - why not...

Long story short....

I bought a handful of them, now there are separated and potted up in my little greenhouse. Let's see what kind of species we got here - time will tell...

Happy growing -

Lars

Definitely not Pritchardia, they are going to be pinnate palms. I’d say your original expectation was right, likely C lutescens.

Pritchardias will put out strap leaves first and look nothing like those. However, the fact that that label exists suggests you should look out for seedlings with strap leaves and short petioles in these stores. I can't see why they would have a preprinted label for something they have never sold.

Thank you for your comment - it makes absolute sense. I had similar thoughts - there has to be a reason to make such a label...

I got to check that shop from now on more often.
