Can palms thrive despite having mealy bugs or scale if they are big enough?

Mealybugs are probably the #1 villain vs houseplants, but in nature frequent rains and mealybug predators can sometimes keep their numbers under control. Some insects eat mealybugs which is one way to control their population.
