I have 2 Foxtails, one in the ground for "experimental purposes", and the other in a pot as a backup for if experiment 1 goes south. Well, the backup was pushing out a spear this Spring, very slowly at that. The spear seemed to get to the size it should be opening, and it never did open. A new spear started coming in after that one, so I knew something was wrong. It couldn't be lack of fertilizer, as everything had been fertilized. Well, I decided to help the spear open. Bad idea, the entire frond died. The new spear began to slow down and is only partially open at the top, but has not moved for probably 2 months now. I decided to clean the palm up a bit as I noticed a slight bulge towards the bottom of the crownshaft. After cleaning it up, I was very confused, it was pretty dark in color but the inside portions was white in color at the time. Well, this bulge has slowly expanded and the white has turned green. Ill be damned if it isn't a new growth point.

I cant imagine this is something that happens often.

Now, what do I need to do to help this little guy survive? Less sun while it develops, extra water? I'm completely lost, I've never dealt with anything like this before so any input is greatly appreciated!

The best luck I have had on stuff like this is to gently slice straight up the split with a razor blade.. you really just want to allow the latest spear to head up/outward. By just cutting the split further (but not deep) the old frond can still make energy.

good luck!

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Is it definitely a new growth point and not an inflorescence? It's pretty common for a plant under stress to put it's energy into making seed, and that would explain why the old spear stopped moving.

Just confirmed today that it’s a new growth point. The little baby frond that’s very messily opening is kinda cute lol
