Things looking a little dry up your way? On the news looks like lots of areas burning. I have seen some of your pictures of palms in your garden quite amazing for your part of the world. I grew up in Vancouver but moved to Australia back in the 70s.

Very dry is the key phrase every summer now. There's little to no summer rain anymore. Vancouver Island is spared to some extend because lightening strikes are rare here and it's the human caused fires that is more of an issue. It's hotter in summers and for longer periods than it was back in the 70's. We had a heat dome 2 years ago when it was 42°C / 106°F and the hot spot Lytton hit 49.6°C / 121°F and the entire town burnt to the ground. Regards, Barrie.

Posted

That was a terrible fire storm that went through Lytton such a beautiful little town. My wife and I went though there in the summer of 2006 and watched the natives catch the salmon from the river. Courtenay is a beautiful place as well went through there on our way to Campbell River. I guess growing palms in around your area can be challenging. How many species of palms are you growing at the moment? Do you need to deal with water restrictions? Here in Port Macquarie we have had plenty of rain over the last couple of years but this summer could bring water restriction back.

Solid zone 9, I can expect at least one night in the mid to low twenties every year.

Hot, dry summers. Cold, wet winters.

Our indoor cats have a nice view out their screen windows too.  They enjoy being with us when we are in the outdoor family room.

Wonderful views from indoors. It was fun wandering though the outdoors at the PSSC meeting last November, thanks for hosting us.

Very cool outdoor cat jungle space! Adorable cats, too! Could you share your source? A family member would appreciate this set up.

Thanks Kim, we actually got it a couple of years ago for a puppy for indoor space for him, then it went back into it's box until my wife had the idea of using it for the two kittens on our deck.  It is a "Cottage View Dog Kennel" nominal area of 5'x5' and came with the tarp cover which is attached with grommets and zip ties.  I don't recall where we ordered it, except I believe it wasn't in stock so had to get it online.  The kittens both love it.

@Tracy, thanks for the info! I will check it out. It looks like a great solution for these cats.

How old is yours and do you get viable seed from it. Must be a challenge to keep all those palms you have.

That's a decent size for its age, well done. I guess keeping palms indoors for a large part of the year you don't want particularly fast growth height wise, unless you have high ceilings.

This palm was almost all the year outdoors, except maybe about all together 2 weeks during frosty periods below -2°C.

Keeping this thread alive. If you have a circa early 2000's house then you know about the "TV nook", a pop-out so you can fit your old 4:3 entertainment center into a room. Well, if you remember 4:3 TV's then you probably remember In Living Color (where Jim Carrey got his first big break) and just like Homey the Clown, we don't play that!

I knocked out the walls, reframed it, super supported the cantilevered "roof" and we put frameless windows in. I had to call people for the stucco and sheetrock. Oh and the glass guy too. I'm a snobby electrician lol. Actually, I'm just not that good at those crafts. Whatever you want to call it. It's just commercial glass stuck together with silicone. The walls became windows.

This is that view. Now we can see the pond. TV is overrated, cancel your Comcast lol!

Arenga on the left of me, pygmy date on my right, here I am stuck in the middle (of my TV nook) with you
