So this new frond was looking fine up until recently when I speculate it collapsed on it's own. What is your take on this?

I would assume that this is a mechanical damage, rather than a nutrient issue.  Perhaps a cat or opossum climbed up the plant, or a large bird alighted on the spear ?  Very strange,  this has never happened in my garden.    :bummed:

I suppose... pretty disappointing as it was almost done and ready to open. I assume all I can do is cut it off, since I don't think it can open at all.

Somebody yanked on that thing. Looks to be close to a walkway. Is this a public walkway by chance?

I think about this with my Chambeyronia cuz they are very close to the sidewalk and their spears shoot straight up in the air. Almost inviting the stupid and inquisitive. 🤪

It is a public walkway... I should have looked at the cameras to confirm, but it's been too long since it happened. That's a bummer.

I thought mechanical damage right away too. I have hood rats that used to walk my neighborhood and break stuff and throw it on the ground. My sunflowers in particular.

Your palm will grow out of it, of course. I'm sorry this happened.

Edit: *Darold enters chat: what's a sunflower? We can't grow those in The Sunset* ;p

Solid zone 9, I can expect at least one night in the mid to low twenties every year.

Hot, dry summers. Cold, wet winters.

Yeah, probably a crackhead that we had snooping around a while back. I recently saw signs he has returned...
