I have 2.  I have several new fronds in the center of both Sylvester’s. I noticed 3 weeks ago that a couple of the new fronds are brown. They are not fully opened yet, but I can tell that they’re brown. I laid out fertilizer for the first time lastweek. Does anyone have any advice or experience with this issue? Should I be concerned?

Phoenix palms will often have a “sheath” or thin layer attached to the emerging spears that eventually falls off. It’s often a brownish color. The photo is a little fuzzy but that’s what that looks like.

Thank you for the reply.  I feel better.  I wasn’t really sure what was going on with my Sylvester’s. Thanks again Jim.

Hi Chris, I noticed the exact same thing on my sylvester palm and glad to have found your post thread. I find what Jim stated reassuring also. May I ask if you were able to confirm that the center browning is indeed the sheath of the new spear or if it turned out to be something else?

My sylvester palms do the same thing.  Give them another couple weeks.
I occasionally have to add extra potassium/magnesium to my palm fertilizer to keep the frond ends from browning.
