I want a palm, but i don't know which one to choose. i only have 2 palms and am not very experienced with them so i am asking you what should be my 3rd. if your wondering why its in the potted palms group, its because i want a palm that can stay in a pot for several years without outgrowing my ceiling.  i love royal and date palms to give an idea. (thanks very much for the suggestions!)

i would get a canary island date palm but in 3-4 years they get 5 ft wide.

For you probably a washingtonia to plant out later?  Here is a tour of ones I have that can stay potted and you can see differences.  In Texas these may need to be in afternoon shade.

your palms look great! I already have a Washingtonia robusta. It’s about 3 feet tall. It was actually my first palm tree.

@2palm where is this potted palm gonna spend most of its time ? I have a decent rotation of palms that live in pots , that also over winter in my garage. From Uber tropical Coconuts and Licuala Grandis to super Hardy Sabal Uresana and BxJ. Some will be potted for life and others are growing to size to get put in the ground.

Without knowing too much of what you want I recommend the Chamaedorea genus. These make great potted specimens and even house plants. My favorite being C.Metallica which has been super easy and care free and I only bring it inside when below freezing. Another care free palm in a pot has been my bottle palm which has been in a container for 8+ years. Now over winter the fronds can start to get fried and it will take all summer to get looking good again. Another great container palm is (Dypsis) Lutescens.

Chamaedoreas rock. I had a C. Cataractarum that got freaking massive just sitting in the corner under a grow bulb. Very little effort. 98% of its water came from when I changed out my dog's water. (My dog is weird and won't drink out of a bowl. He drinks out of fast food cups.)

😂 My dog is particular as well.

Chamaedorea are great.

Very young C Costaricana, on its third bifid leaf.

C plumosa below, though I don't recommend it for indoors. This one is in a small atrium and is still a little stretched.

Hard to beat Howea for sure. Chamaedorea elegans and Chrysalidocarpus (Dypsis) lutescens are obvious choices due to wide availability and low cost. Consider separating some seedlings out of the community pots to appreciate their individual beauty.

C elegans seedling below.

C (D) lutescens. Needs a bright spot. Not a good outdoor grower here due to predominantly cool weather, needs just a little more warmth. Widely grown as houseplants.

Not a palm, but Beaucarnea recurvata are pretty awesome too.

@Rivera I still have my c. Plumosa. I had to bring it indoors due to wild animals tearing it up.

That's a prime target for a feline. 😁

I love mine, but it's been so slow. Beautiful little baby though.

R.excelcis is a good, long-term indoor Palm, as well as any Chamaedorea. A Spindle Palm will also do well indoors and can be brought outside once the frost has passed next spring.

All these are easy to find, in contrast to some other suggestions.

Hmm not sure how fast an Elaeis would trunk in a pot for you…..

fast trunking would be a Chamaedorea Tepeilote or a Wodyetia Bifurcata or adonida merrillii 👍🏻❤️
