I thought this was cool!  I walk by this palm all the time in my neighborhood but only tonight noticed the split trunk because a dead frond was caught in the "v."  I believe it's an Areca catechu and this is in Fort Lauderdale, FL.  Pretty uncommon to see a trunk like this, no?  (Note: The picture doesn't show it well but the trunk is single and then splits about halfway up into two)

Looks more like Ptychosperma elegans to me. Cool bifid trunk though, there are a few Sabals with something similar around here. It often happens after a lightning strike

I think you're right on the species!  Makes more sense and I often get the two confused.
