Butia I.D.

I bought this as a 1gl in 2017 from KW palms.  He told me it was a hybrid but that he forgot what it was.

I know nothing of Butia or the their crosses.

It has been fast and neglected.

The trunk is getting really big! What do I have?

Butia x Jubaea?

That's what a friend of mine thought.

I don't know Butia at all.

It's been really fast and neglected.

Six years from a 1 gl.

That reminds me of the one I bought as a seedling about 30 years ago. It was labeled as a Butia Bonnetti (spelling?) . I planted it in the ground in 1998 on a south facing slope. It is very large now and has become quite blue looking. The same color as the Brahea Armata that is near it. It was much the color of yours for the first ten years or so , a very light greenish color. The person I bought it from was a IPS member and sold many hybrids back in the day .

Interwsting one of my smaller ones has turned silver as well. About time to put it in the ground.

If it's a hybrid, it appears to be very Butia dominant.  Looks like a pretty normal Butia to me.

Which Butia do you think it is?

I just want to put a name on it.

I think you have a Jubutia, a cross between Jubaea and Butia. Exactly which species of Butia it was crossed with I don't know. Hopefully someone else can identify that.

It looks pretty close to a typical Butia Odorata to me.  I have a couple of Jubaea x Butia and Butia x Jubaea from Patrick Schaefer, but none of them are big enough to be a good visual comparison.  It's possible that it's a BxJ or possibly a Bx(BxJ), and just not large enough yet to know for sure.  There are some photos of large Butia x Jubaea here: https://www.palmpedia.net/wiki/Butia_x_Jubaea
