So Believe I’ve posted this before . Got it from Kevin weaver years ago 15 gallon . This plant hasn’t flushed in 2 years . When it flushes it’s always late fall winter . Anyone else have one of these . I knew of a few but they died of a rotting death . This guy has been solid plant just slowwwwwwww . Finally getting a flush 2 years later .

I have a pair of Sclavoi x Ituriensis, bought from IceBlueCycads about 4 years ago as large seedlings.  Both have grown pretty steadily, and seem to appreciate the swamp of Florida.  I'd guess that both halves of the hybrid are ok with water, so maybe it's tough keeping them happy in CA?  In front the Natalensis x Horridus is flushing too.

I have to wonder if yours is the reverse cross which I have from George Sparkman.  I have 2, Encephalartos whitelockii × sclavoi.  Mine appesr to be similar in age as yours, maybe a little older or faster growing.  They flush or cone annually.   The male plant is coning now.  Mine are both full sun against a South facing wall which adds heat.  I didn't amend the soil much, so it is mostly the sandy material naturally occurring in this part of Leucadia.  Puzzling why yours is slow because you get plenty of heat even in partial shade there compared to full sun here on the coast.  Both parents grow well here too.  I am only growing sclavoi but have seen healthy whitelockii around this area in other gardens.

I Have whitelockii close to it that flushes more than this one . Not sure on the size of this ones caudex never measured it . Caudex would for sure easily fill the diameter of a 15 gallon pot . I did hit it with some high nitrogen fertilizer back in late september . I also can’t remember wether it was sclavoi x whitelockii or whitelockii x sclavoi . My guess would be whitelockii x sclavoi .

Here are my two Encephalartos whitelockii ×sclavoi mentioned above in full sun.

So was getting worried about this flush but warm weather and ample rain has helped It along .

Congratulations.   I agree, flushes in late December are very vulnerable.   Sorry to hear your laurentianus didn't fare so well.  I am hoping to get lucky with my Encephalartos laurentianus which is in an early stage of flushing.
