My coco queen is finally going pinnate. Planted as a small 5 gallon last year, it’s really taking on decent growth.
It was planted in an old coconut experiment so it’s mostly sand, cacti soil and native clay soil and it gets frequent watering.

Anyone else growing these in SoCal? I am in Santa Ana, CA.

That is gorgeous! How old is it? I am excited to see mine grow.

I got mine from Jungle Music in SoCal. Paid $150 for a 5 gallon which I know is high.

I don’t remember when it was planted but I had to buy a 15gal. Because I wanted one and nothing else was available!

Oh wow!!! You are not crazy just part of the club. We’ve all had our share of expensive purchases lol. I initially thought these were pretty fast growers, not sure if I am convinced anymore.

I'm starting to think that myself.  I bought a couple of seedlings from Erik 3 years ago and mine are not quite pinnate yet.

Anyone have any ID diagnostic characteristics? I have some what appear to be hybrids, with no labels.

Thoughts?

One thing I’ve read and experienced with mine are longer leaflets than other syagrus. Mine also stays a darker green throughout the year. I have a tiny schizophylla so I’m curious to see them grow side by side.

I have a big schizo, which is buried under some bigger Arena engleri; see if I can extract a decent picture tomorrow.

That looks great! Thanks for the extra pics. It’s so stately and graceful. Mine is in full hot sun so I’m hoping that speeds up growth a bit. I have also seen thick trunks but mostly thinner. Part of the reason I wanted this one is because it was marketed to have a thinner trunk.
