Should i protect them ?

I was wondering what I should protect the low is supposed to to 20F, on Tuesday and I was wondering what needs a cover.

I have a small windmill and a Queen Sago Which I don't want to lose the foliage on along with a sabal minor and needle but I'm 99% sure they'll be fine.

The smaller ones I would protect, compare a 2ft windmill to a 4-5ft windmill, both juvenile palms but one gets frond damage at 13f while the other gets around 18-20f, so I would protect, from my own experience. Im expected to see 15f tomorrow as the low tomorrow and then 40f as a low in 3 days. Such crazy weather! 🤣

I said it too quick, forecast changed, we are expected to see 13f this night! 😆 I can't believe the weather! One day 13f the next day 40f! No worries for my palm though, its sitting in a cozy 45f. Usually though once it reaches 46, the lights turn off and in 4-6 hours it reaches 35f and the lights turn on again in a cycle. It at least keeps the temps regulated and it doesn't get too hot inside.

I think 20f is approaching defoliation on the sago, at least upper teens.

If the cycad truly is a Queen sago (Cycas circinalis), that is a Zone 10 plant and it will not like anything below freezing.  Without substantial protection it's a possibility the entire plant could be killed,  not just the fronds.

If you're wanting a cold hardy cycad you should be looking more for Cycas Taitungensis or panzhihuaensis.

I just had 13F this morning, severe arctic blast and the palm box reached 60 F somehow, 47F difference! The mini lights really do help in the insulated box, but they take some time to heat up.  45 F is the normal temperature before it turns off but I guess my sister messed with the settings and the lights have been on for the past 24 hours.

Where I live they come back in no time once the weather warms up .

Also I'm pretty sure the sago will be defoliated and the windmill should be fine fingers crossed

Those are really small. Old blanket plus hand warmers under the blanket. Easy day.

They should all be fine except that I would protect the King Sago with some burlap wrap (even though it should also be fine).  If it is a Queen Sago, definitely add burlap wrap.

did throw a blanket over the sago ( thanks to all who suggested it ), and so far so good it stayed 25F under there. Did the same thing to the windmill

Should I cover my windmill and needle to keep the rain off of them, We're forecasted for 2+ inches of rain and then it's supposed to be in the low 20s or teens a few days after. I went ahead and put some plastic coverings over them and I'm wondering if it'll help avoid spear pull , or if it could do more damage than good for them.

She probably unplugged it to run her hair dryer.

What zone are you in. If zone 8 or below then put a bucket on it and cover it with some mini incandescent lights for when it gets colder than 15F
