🌿 Help Save Ravenea moorei this Giving Tuesday 🌴

The International Palm Society, in partnership with the Royal Botanic Garden, Kew, is on a mission to preserve and protect this endangered palm species, and we need YOUR support!

Originating from the Comoro Islands, this elegant species faces imminent extinction in the wild, with the Kew male tree possibly being the only one in cultivation.

Your donation will support an international team's emergency scientific fieldwork in the Comoro Islands, led by Dr. Bill Baker. 🌴

🔍 The team aims to survey and assess the wild status of endangered palms like Ravenea moorei and Chrysalidocarpus lanceolatus. Their findings will guide a comprehensive conservation action plan for Comorean palms.

🤝 Be a part of this critical effort! Your contribution fuels scientific research, conservation initiatives, and horticultural training. Together, let's ensure the survival of these extraordinary palms.

Thank you Richard!

I just donated myself.
Everything went smoothly and I got a quick email receipt that can be used for tax purposes.

There was a small glitch in that this screen popped up right after I paid.

Seeing this screen made me wonder if I had made an input error.

Then I saw the receipt in my inbox.

I have just emailed those in charge of support to try to fix this little glitch and don’t be afraid to donate now.

At Kew, we are so grateful that the IPS is supporting us in this way. We really want to make a difference for Ravenea moorei and, with your help, we think we can. I've just returned from a reconnaissance trip to the Comoros and have started another thread with some news on Ravenea moorei in the wild... Check it out!

The Save the Species initiative is already seeing pay-offs in Colombia (with Sabinaria) and Madagascar (Tahina).  I am thrilled that Bill will be involved in the conservation work with Ravenea moorei.  This is such a worthwhile project!  I hope all the PalmTalkers kick in whatever they can to help make this project a success.  I've made my donation; I hope everyone else can do the same.

Here’s an update I have been asked to post regarding this year’s conservation focus:

🌴 Help Us Save the Species! 🌴

We're just $4,000 away from our goal that will help protect the endangered palms of the Comoro Islands. Your contribution will make a significant impact, helping plan emergency scientific fieldwork in the Comoro Islands and devising a conservation action plan and training.

A big THANK YOU to those who have already donated. Your support will make a real difference in preserving the endangered palms of the Comoro Islands, includingRavenea moorei!

If you have not yet donated, there's still time! You can learn more about the Save the Species campaign and make a donation here:

With tremendous gratitude towards many palm-talkers in our wonderful community, I am thrilled to announce that the campaign, now closed, met our goal!  We have successfully raised over $25,000 for this noble cause. Please look forward to future reporting from Dr. Bill Baker of RBG Kew from the Comoro Islands in the International Palm Society newsletter. Additionally an article will eventually appear in the quarterly scientific journal Palms.

Thank you again and happy new year to all!!

I am blown away by the response to the Save the Species appeal this year! It is just fantastic to have the support from the IPS and its community for this important project. All my colleagues here at Kew are so grateful to you all. We will keep you posted. Now that we know the appeal has been a success, we can start planning our next field trip to the Comoro Islands (likely towards the end of this year). Already from our reconnaissance trip, a handful of Ravenea moorei seed are starting to germinate here in our quarantine house. We cannot wait to get out there to do get on with the work!

What a wonderful way to start 2024! Happy New Year to you all!
